DYing art of joke telling

Joke-telling may be a dying art, but we can take a lesson from our comic geniuses.

If we're to believe a new survey, some 40 per cent of adults today would rather share gags via email than swap one-liners face-to-face.

Ricky Gervais
The art of timing: Ricky Gervais

Would-be comedians these days dispatch shaggy dog stories or visual gags - and in so doing have lost the art of timing and delivery. Joke tellers wander about the stage and delivers gags. We don't learn much about his life and times we aren't given a sermon on the ills of the world and he doesn't try to touch our souls or make us think deeply about society

Lenny Henry, on his recent quest for the British sense of humour, worried about the damage to social cohesion as a consequence of joke-telling's decline. Struggling to find any fresh "Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman" patter, he asked whether political correctness hadn't put paid to our willingness to risk a joke to break the ice.

Another survey two years ago suggested in all seriousness that the amount of time we spend laughing every day had fallen from an average of 18 minutes in the 1950s to just six minutes today.

The truth is that there never was a golden age for telling jokes; most people have always been pretty rubbish at it. That's why comedians tend to earn rather a lot if they get it right. And while we should be worrying if comics themselves had given up, we're actually living through a boom time in good, old-fashioned one-liners.

  • "I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me 'Can you give me a lift?' I said, 'Sure, you look great, the world's your oyster, go for it.'" Tim Vine
  • "Where there's a will, there's a relative." Ricky Gervais
  • "They say that guns don't kill people, people kill people. But I think the guns help." Eddie Izzard

    windows xp maintenance tasks

If your computer seems slower than it used to be, it probably is. Over time, computers get slower because files become disorganized and resources are consumed by unnecessary software. Fortunately, Microsoft Windows XP includes tools to clean up your computer and restore its performance. The five steps in this article will walk you through the use of these tools to tune up your computer.

Note:- Take Backup of all your data before proceeding any of the following tasks

    Remove unused programs

First, remove programs you don’t use anymore. Programs take up space on your computer, and some run in the background without your Knowledge. Removing programs you don’t use can help restore your computer’s performance.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    Click Add or Remove Programs.

In the Currently installed programs list, click the program that you want to remove. Then, click Remove or Change/Remove.The below program is an example.

Follow the instructions that appear to remove your program. Each program has a different process. Restart your computer if prompted.

Install and run antispyware or Adaware software

You should always have an antispyware program installed, because spyware might install itself on your computer without your knowledge. After you install the antispyware program, run it to detect and remove any unwanted programs.

    My recommended Programs

    Ad-Aware 2007 Download from here

    Spybot Search&Distroy Download from here

    Hijackthis Download from here

    Windows Defender Download from here

    Run Disk Cleanup tool

Removing unused programs is a great way to free up disk space, which will speed up your computer. Another way to find wasted disk space is to use the Disk Cleanup tool.

Disk Cleanup is available on both Home and Professional versions of XP. The utility can be accessed in one of the following methods isted below.

    Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup

    or

Click Start>Run type cleanmgr and click OK

    or

In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, click Properties, click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup.

Once it opens you should see similar to the following screen here select the files and click ok

    Defragment your hard disk drive

As advanced as hard drives have become, one item they are not very good at is housekeeping, or maybe that should be drive keeping. When files are created, deleted, or modified it’s almost a certainty they will become fragmented. Fragmented simply means the file is not stored in one place in its entirety, or what computer folks like to call a contiguous location. Different parts of the file are scattered across the hard disk in noncontiguous pieces. The more fragmented files there are on a drive, the more performance and reliability suffer as the drive heads have to search for all the pieces in different locations. The Disk Defragmenter Utility is designed to reorganize noncontiguous files into contiguous files and optimize their placement on the hard drive for increased reliability and performance.

You can open the disk Defragment using one of the following procedure

Use the Properties of Your Local Disk

    Open My Computer

Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.

On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.

    Click Defragment.

    or

    Use Computer Management MMC

    Start Computer Management MMC (Compmgmt.msc).

    Click Disk Defragmenter.

Click the volume that you want to defragment, and then click Defragment.

    or

    Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter

    or

    Start>Run>and type dfrg.msc Click OK

The Disk Defragmenter appears. Click your hard disk drive, and then click Defragment.

Disk Defragmenter will work for at least several minutes, although it might take several hours. When prompted, click Close.

    Sample report as follows

    Disconnect unused network connections

Mapping network drives allows one computer to read and write files to another computer’s hard disk drive as if they were directly connected to each other. The problem with network drives is that Windows XP will attempt to connect to the network drive when it starts up. If the remote computer does not respond immediately, Windows XP will wait, which will slow down your startup time.

Additionally, some programs will attempt to connect to the network drive when you browse for files and folders. If you have ever tried to open a file and had to wait several seconds, it is probably because the program was trying to establish a network connection—even if the file you are opening is on your local computer.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

In the Tools menu, click Disconnect Network Drive.

Select the network drives that you no longer need, and then click OK.

    Clear your Internet History

    For IE6 Users

    Open Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

    Click OK.

    For IE 7 Users

    Open Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0

Click Tools and select Internet Options

STEPS TO A SOFT EDGE PHOTO

print your images with soft edges

    1. FILE>OPEN Select the photo file you want to print

    2. On the keyboard press the "D" key. (This sets the background to white! If you would rather have the background go to black simply press the "X" key on the key board after you press the "D" key!)

    3. Go to the tool bar on the left hand side of the page and at the top left side of the tool bar you will see the Marquee tool. (It looks like a dotted square). Notice the little arrow in the lower right corner. Using the mouse, place the pointer over the Marquee tool and hold down the left mouse button . Here you will see the other selection tools that are available to you. Select the elliptical tool by moving the arrow with the mouse over it and left CLICK the mouse buton.

    4. On your photo, using the mouse again, move the arrow (which changes to a small +) into the photo to the lower right part of the photo. Then holding down the mouse button, move the mouse to the upper left and you will see the oval with the marching ants.

    5. Using the mouse, move the arrow INSIDE the ellipse or circle where it changes to an arrow and small square and by holding down the button on the mouse, you will be able to move the ellipse around to where you want it. (If the size of the ellipse is not what you want, move the "+" with the mouse outside the ellipse and CLICK the mouse button. Then make your ellipse again to the size you want.)

    6. Once you have it where you want it, your screen should show the photo subject surrounded by the marching ants.

    7. Now go to the top of the page and point the arrow using the mouse to SELECT. CLICK on left mouse button . Scroll down under SELECT with the mouse and the arrow until you see FEATHER. (It will turn Blue when you point to it!) Then CLICK the mouse button.

    8. You will see a dialog box marked Feather Radius. Type in 20 in the box. (In the future you can experiment using different numbers but we find 15-20 generally works best!) Click OK.

    9. Go back to the top of the screen and locate SELECT again.

    10. Scroll down under SELECT until you see INVERSE. Then CLICK on INVERSE with the mouse button.

    11. Now you will see marching ants on the outside of the photo as well as the ellipse inside it.

    12. On the keyboard locate the "Backspace" key and press it once.

    13. Next hold down the "Ctrl" key on the key board in the lower left corner of the keyboard and then press down the "D" key. (This will remove the marching ants from your picture and give you the soft edges!)

    14. Now your photo should have nice edges ready for printing.

how to cope with the internet - and other inventions

    Douglas Adams said in 1999...
"I suppose earlier generations had to sit through all this huffing and puffing with the invention of television, the phone, cinema, radio, the car, the bicycle, printing, the wheel and so on, but you would think we would learn the way these things work, which is this:"

    "1) everything that's already in the world when you're born is just normal;

    2) anything that gets invented between then and before you turn 35 is incredibly exciting and creative and, given opportunity, you can make a career out of it;

    3) anything that gets invented after you're 35 is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilization as we know it until it's been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really.”

    Rainbow iceberg in the Antarctic
Oyvind Tangen, 62, was on board the research ship G O Sars when he photographed the unusual ice formation, floating a few miles off the coast of the frozen continent
While most icebergs are white due to tiny bubbles trapped inside, which scatter the light in every direction, some pick up a multitude of colours due to various natural phenomena

Green stripes are the result of algae growing in the ice, while brown, black and yellow lines form as the ice sheets from which bergs are formed pick up layers of sediment
Deep blue lines can also appear when the air bubbles are squeezed out due to rapid melting and re-freezing of the ice.

World's oldest animation, 5,200 years old

Leaping Goat - World's oldest animation

An Italian team of archaeologists unearthed the bowl in the 1970s from a burial site in Iran’s Burnt City, but it was only recently that researchers noticed the images on the bowl tell an animated visual story.

The oldest cartoon character in the world is a goat leaping to get the leaves on a tree.

According to an article in the Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies:

The artefact bears five images depicting a wild goat jumping up to eat the leaves of a tree, which the members of the team at that time had not recognised the relationship between the pictures.

The Burnt City (Shar-i Sokhta) is a site in Iran that dates to about 2600 BC, and has seen some decades of investigation.
Some researchers claimed the tree on the bowl to be the Assyrian Tree of Life, but the bowl dates to a period before the Assyrian civilization.

    Resetting Your XP Password

    Resetting Your XP Password

We are all pretty lucky when we forget our password on an online Web service, wouldn't you agree? I mean, if you ever forget your password, almost all Web sites can e-mail it to you or they allow you to reset it by answering a security question. But what if you forget your password for Windows XP? It's happened to the best of us and when it does, you may think there's no way to recover it. Well, I'm happy to tell you there is a way and that's what I'm going to show you today! You know, just in case it ever happens to you. Here we go!

1.) If you ever forget your password for Windows XP, you need to start your computer in Safe Mode. To do that, reboot your computer and as soon as you see your manufacturer's logo pop up, repeatedly hit the F8 key on your keyboard.

2.) Soon after, you will see this menu:

Make sure the Safe Mode option is highlighted and press Enter.

3.) When the log in screen appears, log in to your Administrator account.

4.) A dialogue box will then appear, notifying you that your computer is running in Safe Mode. Just select Yes for this one.

You may also notice that your resolution is a little distorted.

If so, that's okay. It will go back to normal after you reboot again.

5.) Next, select File, Control Panel. Then double click on the User Accounts icon, which looks like this:

6.) All of the accounts on your computer will be displayed. Go ahead and select the account you would like to remove the password from.

7.) After that, select the link.

8.) Finally, if you'd like to add a new password, you can select the link. But be sure to write this one down in a safe place, so you don't have to go through this again!

    how to edit/convert pdf files

The simplest is to click on File, Save As from the free Acrobat Reader and save the text. That text can be then opened in Word for editing. However, all formatting, fonts and images are lost.

Many commercial programs will do a full conversion. To find them, type "convert PDF to word" into Google. There are free alternatives. If you have a free Gmail account, then you can send that PDF as an attachment to your account and then select View as html. Then click on File, Save Page As or cut and paste and save into a new Word document.

All images and some formatting will be lost.

    20 Most Fascinating Prehistoric Paintings

    clipped from www.oddee.com

Known as "the prehistoric Sistine Chapel," the Lascaux Caves, a cave complex in southwestern France, contain some of the most remarkable paleolithic cave paintings in the world, from at least 15,000 years ago.

The cave was discovered on 12 September 1940 by four teenagers, Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel, and Simon Coencas, as well as Ravidat's dog, Robot. Public access was made easier after World War II. By 1955, the carbon dioxide produced by 1,200 visitors per day had visibly damaged the paintings. The cave was closed to the public in 1963 in order to preserve the art.

    clipped from www.coolscifi.com

Explanation: The striking spiral galaxy M104 is famous for its nearly edge-on profile featuring a broad ring of obscuring dust. Seen in silhouette against a bright bulge of stars, the swath of cosmic dust lanes lends a hat-like appearance to the galaxy in optical images suggesting the more popular moniker, The Sombrero Galaxy. Here, Hubble Space Telescope archival image data has been reprocessed to create this alternative look at the well-known galaxy. The newly developed processing improves the visibility of details otherwise lost in overwhelming glare, in this case allowing features of the galaxy's dust lanes to be followed well into the bright central region. About 50,000 light-years across and 28 million light-years away, M104 is one of the largest galaxies at the southern edge of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.

    Ditch micro$$$ for ZOHO

Been using Microsoft Office 2003 for 3 years now, and it works, it's familiar. However, I've seen signs that it doesn't quite integrate with Vista well, the subtle suggestion being that I should upgrade to a new version of Office. For a few hundred more bucks.
Well, lets break free from MS bondage
Zoho.com is a family of programs very similar to office, except that it runs on the internet, not in my PC. And, oh yes, this is important: it's free.

Another advantage is that, since the program is executed at the other end of the internet, updates are taken care of by Zoho. No more losing control of my computer because MS decides the time is right to upload patches to my Office.

US cluster bombs still blasting Laotian children

this is dedicated to my friend Leung, who lost most of his family in this disgrace.
    clipped from www.banminesusa.org
    On
April 30, 1975 Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces, finally
ending U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

    From 1964
to 1973 the United States dropped 90 million cluster bomblets on
neighboring Laos in 580,000 bombing missions—equivalent to
one planeload every 8 minutes, 24 hours-a-day, for 9 years.

    Up
to 30% of the cluster bomblets failed to detonate, leaving as many
as 25-30 million unexploded bomblets covering more than one-third
of Laos at war’s end. It is estimated that there are at least
10 million cluster submunitions still littering the land.

In the years since, as many as 12,000 civilians—an
    estimated 40% of them
children—have been killed or maimed, with hundreds of new
casualties each year. In addition, cluster bomblets hamper basic
food production and economic development in Laos, one of the poorest
    countries in the world.

According to the UN Development Program, at current funding levels
the cluster bomb removal program may take up to 100 years to complete.

First Mars Avalanches Seen In Action

    Mars avalanche image

March 3, 2008—The first-ever picture of avalanches occurring on Mars might have had scientists yodeling for joy when they found it among the latest batch of images from NASA's orbiting HiRISE camera.

The action took place along a stretch of cliff that stands about 2,300 feet (700 meters) tall and slopes in places by more than 60 degrees.

The cliff borders the dome of layered deposits that sits atop the red planet's north pole. At the top of the cliff (left) sit layers of carbon dioxide frost that are now in retreat as Martian spring gets into gear.

The bulk of material that cascaded off the slope is probably made up of fine-grained ice and dust, the researchers say, although it might include a few large chunks of debris.

    boost your wifi reception

Wireless networking is based on the same radio-frequency (RF) technology that used to keep you jiggling your rabbit-ears TV antenna to get a better picture. That means if you want maximum range and enhanced performance from your wireless notebook or PDA, you need to deploy the best antenna you can—and place it as carefully as possible - the fact is that your network is only as good as your antenna system.

An antenna/extender made from even a small kitchen strainer can boost signals by about 25 percent although it should be noted that the new antenna is directional – meaning that you have to point the opening of the bowl in the direction of the hotspot to pull it in. In practice this means that wifi signals that are NOT being pointed at come in weaker than before. So take the time to move your antenna around to get the best positioning. You can download an application, NetStumbler, that helps find signals and shows you their relative strengths here.
Just make sure your strainer is metal.

    How to Improve WiFi Reception

This is a featured article. Click here for more information.

    WiFi router and PC card
    WiFi router and PC card
... here are some quick tips to maximize your signal strength and minimize interference with a little wireless know how..

    Steps

    1. Put large furniture along the exterior walls of your home.
    2. Minimize mirrors. All metallic surfaces reflect WiFi signals, including the thin metal layer found in most mirrors.
    3. Place your router in one of the following locations:
      • Near the center of the house
      • Off the floor, ideally on a high shelf
      • As far as possible from your neighbor's Wi-Fi router (which, of course, you've made sure is using a different channel)
      • Away from cordless phones and microwaves, which operate on the same 2.4-Ghz frequency.
      • Keep antennas as far away from power cords and other computer wires as possible. Those cords and wires can interfere with radio reception.

    Tips

    • The computer case itself can be a significant barrier to the Wi-Fi signal - try positioning the case so it doesn't come between the network card and router antennas.
    • The addition of a "high gain" (higher dBi) external antenna will often provide increased reception signal and performance. Note that a higher dBi increases the signal horizontally, but decreases vertically. If you need to cover several floors, a higher dBi will probably not help. In this case, you might consider buying a Wi-Fi amplifier, which will boost your signal.
    • Reflectors can also be used to good advantage. Use NetStumbler to tune your placement of the reflector. Compact disks can be used, as can anything that actually looks like a parabolic reflector. The reflector, of course, should be placed behind the receiving device or antenna. Large increases in signal strength can be expected. This trick also works with cellphones.
    • If all else fails, you can look into purchasing a WiFi repeater, which is a piece of hardware you can use to boost the signal between the router and your device.
    • Depending on your brand and model of wireless router, you may be able to replace the built in software with a replacement open source solution that adds much more capabilities and the option to increase the power to your wireless antenna.
    • If you still need more range, consider upgrading your wireless standard, up to Draft N (Regular N has not yet been released) or Wireless G with MIMO. These two technologies will greatly increase the range of a formerly 802.11g or 802.11b network.

    Warnings

    • If you replace your router's firmware, it may void your warranty.
    • If you turn the power up too high on a modified wireless router it may suffer permanent damage.

    Whale Found in Egypt Desert

Photo: Whale Found in Egypt Desert
Egypt may not be the first place you'd look
for whales, but once upon a time the Wadi Hitan desert was underwater
and teeming with the sea giants.
had excavated the first known nearly
complete skeleton of a Basilosaurus isis (pictured). The 50-foot-
long (18-meter-long), 40-million-year-old fossil was shipped to
Michigan, where experts are preserving it. Later they will return the
    fossil to Egypt
    Basilosaurus had the
serpentine shape of a sea monster and short, sharp teeth for hunting
sharks and other prey. Unlike today's whales, it had no
blowhole—the ancient behemoth had to raise its head above water to
breathe. What's more, Basilosaurus still had the feet it
    inherited from its land-dwelling ancestors

    Different types of broadband

    DSL

The fastest option available in Australia is currently ADSL2, which stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is the latest form of DSL, a broadband technology which uses existing telephone lines to transmit information.

DSL requires a special modem to translate the information between the telephone line and your computer. DSL modems are usually offered as part of your internet service contract, but this is starting to change as people hang on to their modems from previous contracts. Keep an eye out for providers who offer modems as an optional purchase if you already have one.

To use DSL and your telephone line simultaneously, you will need to install a line filter on each phone in the house. These cost around $20 and are easy to set up. If you have more than four phones or a security alarm system, a more elaborate solution may be required.

DSL is now the fastest system on offer as advances to the core technology have seen it surpass traditional cable broadband when it comes to raw speed. ADSL2 is the latest and fastest type of DSL, but it isn't available everywhere. Some providers also have different names for it (for example, Optus call it "DSL Direct") so make sure to check with them.

    Cable

While ADSL2 has left traditional cable broadband services looking like a second-placed runner in the race for speed, cable is still worth considering. You should look out for keen plan pricing as competition between service providers increases.

Cable broadband uses pay-TV infrastructure (cabling, exchanges and so on) to transmit information, and prior to the launch of ADSL2 it was the fastest type of broadband on offer.

As with DSL, you will need a different type of modem to use cable broadband, and cable lines will have to be installed with a junction box at your address. Getting cable can be difficult if you are renting a property – especially an apartment – as some providers will refuse to perform the installation.

    Wireless

It's easy to get confused when people talk about wireless internet, because the term is often used for different things. Here we'll separate it into two parts: wireless internet access, and wireless networking (or Wi-Fi).

Wi-Fi is a simple way of sharing a fixed broadband connection (like DSL or cable) in your home without using cables. It's becoming more popular, especially with families who use more than one computer. Wi-Fi is also available at some cafes and bars.

Then there is wireless internet access provided by satellite and mobile networks. Satellite broadband is expensive and is usually more popular in places where access to DSL or cable broadband is limited. It offers fast download speeds, but very slow upload speeds and should only be considered in areas without the right infrastructure for other types of broadband.

The third-generation mobile phone network, known as 3G, allows users to access the internet at high speeds. It is used mainly by mobile phones, and now most mobile networks are offering 3G modems for computers too. This makes internet access highly portable, but the data charges are still quite pricey in comparison to ADSL and cable plans.

CPU-Z and CrystalCPUID check PC makeup

motherboard tweaking is usually handled in the otherwise feature-limited CMOS, so we need tools beyond the CMOS to verify the operating state of a computer. There are 2 good tools out there to do this:

the well known CPU-Z and CrystalCPUID, two utilities that cover the most basic of needs. Both tools are profilers, which are routinely used in basic identification of system components and discovering at what frequencies and what timings various motherboard components and the CPU are running at.

The fundamental aspect of both programs is that they’re based around one of the x86 instructions, CPUID, which was originally intended to allow programmers to easily query the processor to see what features are supported, and has since then been expanded to other features.

The most immediate value of both of these programs however is for their use in overclocking to determine what frequencies and timings the CPU and memory are running at... both make for highly effective tools in ensuring that an overclocked computer is running at what it should be.

CPU-Z in particular also is one of the most accurate programs we have ever seen for reporting the core voltage of a CPU, which is important for determining what voltage a CPU is really running at since the voltage levels requested by the motherboard are seldom perfect, and doubly-important for Intel’s MCM 65nm Q-series processors, which suffer from very high levels of Vdroop.

The other major use for both of these programs, and what we believe is actually their most common use, is simple system and part identification. Both programs can read the CPUID information to determine the model of the processor in use, but they can also read information from the motherboard itself and the RAM. The functionality and accuracy is a little more limited here since most of this information is pulled verbatim from strings in the BIOS and RAM SPD chip, but this information is generally correct unless it’s coming from an OEM board.

Compared to CPU-Z, CrystalCPUID features a handful of additional features such as multiplier control , but in the same vein CPU-Z is a bit simpler, a bit more refined, and a bit easier to use and interpret as a result.

    CrystalCPUID Screen Shot

hack into a windows PC with no password

What you need is a computer/laptop with Linux, connect it to the to-be-attacked PC via a firewire port and need to get the tools from this site. Run a command and voila! The attacked PC is tricked into allowing the attacking computer access to its memory. With full access to the memory, the tool can then modify Windows' password protection code, which is stored there, and render it ineffective.

On the flip side, make sure when you're not using your pc (and it has firewire port) disable the port... under My Network Places->Network Connections. Disable by right-clicking on the 1394 connection.

    Burn an ISO file

An ISO file is an image of a CD or DVD so to use it, you first need to burn it to a CD or DVD.

Burning the ISO image file to a CD or DVD is a little different than just burning the file. To do it, you'll need to choose the "burn image" or "write image" option in your burning software and then choose the file.

If your CD/DVD burning software does not have this option or you want something more simple, try following the steps below to burn an ISO image file to a CD or DVD.

    Here's How:
    1. Download Free Easy CD DVD Burner and follow the on-screen directions to install the software.

Note: Free Easy CD DVD Burner is completely free
    2. Insert a blank CD or DVD in your drive.

    3. Open the Free Easy CD DVD Burner program.

    4. Click on the Copy CD/DVD button on the tool bar at the top of the program window.

    5. Under the Action menu on the left, click the Burn an image file link.

    6. When the Select the image file that you want to burn window opens, locate and select the ISO file you wish to burn to the empty disc and then click Open.

    7. A dialog box will appear asking "Do you want to burn [your chosen ISO file]?".

      Click OK to confirm.

The burning process will automatically begin. The time it takes to burn will depend on the size of the ISO file and the speed of both your PC and burner.

    8. If you view the contents of the disc, you might notice many files and folders. So what happened to the ISO file? Remember that the ISO file is just an image of what should be on the CD or DVD. That ISO file contained the information for all of the files you see on the disc.

    good intel 775 motherboards

The motherboard is one of the most important pieces of any machine. It's also one of the few components where paying more for a higher-quality model is compulsory.

one feature of the board is that Biostar removed the chipset's overspeed protection, so overclockers might want to make a mental note of this board to keep in view.

The general consensus is that it's a decent board.

="Fired right up with an E2160, and instantly went to 333 fsb. Rock solid a 3ghz".
="awesome with E4400 (clocked to 3GHz), and now I'm running it with E8400 (4GHz 24/7 with EIST and C1E enabled). Biostar tech support WAS GREAT"
="Has single PCI-e and aluminum NB/SB heatsinks. No MOSFET/PWM heatsinks. But it has been running very well. No reboots or other issues. Make sure you get modded BIOS from rebelshavenforum.com if you are going to overclock."
="I haven't done much overclocking in the past, so using the automatic overclocking settings in the BIOS make it easy... Love the built-in overclocking utility in Windows. The On-Off and Reset buttons on the PCB are a great feature and the solid-state capacitors are generally reserved for higher-end boards"
="some reviews about problems with the BIOS"
="is easy to install. Bios are easy to use...a low cost highly overclockable board"
="get a 1333 MHz FSB Core 2 (instead of a 1033 MHz E6600), so I could utilize the 1333 FSB that this mobo provides."

The TP35D2-A7 supports all of Intel's processor line-up, including the latest 1333FSB models. Crossfire is not supported, but being a budget board, that's little surprise. Overclocking is a definite possibility, however there have been few who've had more success than others. Luck of the draw, as they say. Still, for the $105 price tag, this board should treat you well.

    MSI P35 Neo2-FR ~$119 USD

Considered to be the best bang for the buck by many, MSI low-end P35 offering is anything but. Unlike other low-end models, the Neo2-FR -does- offer support for ATI Crossfire, thanks to the addition of a second PCI-E slot. Like the others, 1333FSB processors are supported as well as DDR2-1066 RAM.

The fact is, this is a $120 board but looks like one that costs much more. It has lots of copper for effective silent cooling, five S-ATA ports with support for RAID 0/1/0+1/5 and good overclocking potential. If there is any gripe to be had about this board, it would be the layout... it's weird. The required 4-pin and 8-pin power connectors are located in the most inopportune spots. It's as though they did it on purpose! If you can get past that, this board comes highly recommended.

    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R ~$140 USD

There are few downsides to this board. It offers support for both 1333MHz FSB processors, including Intel's upcoming 45nm offerings (the QX9650 is supported, but costly). Although our higher-end boards (and the previously mentioned MSI) include support for dual graphic cards, the P35-DS3R offers only one. This might not matter to you if you plan on using a single graphic card throughout the life of your board. Overall, this is a fantastic offering and well worth a purchase if you are looking to pick up a great board on a relative budget.

    abit IP35 Pro ~$180 USD

abit has been having a great year as far as enthusiast motherboards are concerned, and the IP35 PRO is no exception. Recently, it came highly recommended from AnandTech and Tech Report, .

Besides the great overclocking ability and feature-set, the IP35 PRO includes support for 1333FSB processors, DDR2-800 (which can of course be overclocked), dual PCI-E 16x slots (including Crossfire support), eSATA, great software overclocking tools and also totally passive cooling. No fans means a quiet system, a huge bonus if that's what you are after. Without a doubt, given the price and feature-set, this board is a winner.

Speed up ‘Send To’ Menu opening in windows xp

When you right click and select the ‘Send To’ menu..does it takes ages to load. If so, it’s time you fix it.

Here’s how you can make a slow-loading Send To menu load fast in Windows.

    • First, open the Run command by going to Start >> Run
    • Type sendto and hit Enter
    • A new window should open up listing the items that appear in your slow Send To menu
    • Delete all the unwanted items present there, they’re the cause for the slow loading Send To menu
    • If this doesn’t solve the problem, you’ll have to open Windows Explorer, go to Tools >> Folder Options >> and under the ‘View’ Tab, uncheck ‘Automatically search for network folders and printers’

    a typical VIDEO_TS folder

If you've ever explored the contents of a DVD movie on your PC's DVD drive, you will have seen something like this; two folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.

The VIDEO_TS folder contains all the compressed video and sound files, as well as the information that allows the player to access them in proper order. The AUDIO_TS folder is used for DVD-audio disks and is left empty for DVD-video, though it is always included for compatibility reasons.

The contents of a typical VIDEO_TS folder will resemble this:

The .VOB files contain the actual video and audio data, not to mention subtitles, extra viewing angles, pretty much everything you see and hear. They are up to a gigabyte in size and are numbered sequentially.

The .IFO files contain information about the .VOB files. Your DVD player will use these to locate and sequence the video and audio, figure out where each chapter begins and ends, etc. The .BUP files are backups of the .IFO files.

The VIDEO_TS.IFO and .VOB files are the first items that the DVD player will access, and generally contain the menu, at least in the case of home-authored DVDs.

How to burn a dvd (VIDEO_TS folder)

    Burning pre-authored DVD-Video

    1. Launch Nero Burning Rom in the classic mode (not the Nero Express mode).

    2. Choose DVD from the drop-down menu, and select DVD-Video as the compilation type. Click the New button to open up the DVD layout view.

  • Adding files to the VIDEO_TS folder

  • Choose the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVDVideo -window. Use the right mouse button to Add files to the compilation. You can also use the explorer window to the right to locate the files and drag & drop them to the VIDEO_TS folder. Make sure that the files actually go to the VIDEO_TS folder, and not the root folder of the disc.

Now all you have to do is burn the disc. Click Recorder --> Burn Compilation (or hit CTRL+B). The default settings should be ok. Just click on the Burn button. If you get prompted whether or not you want to burn a multisession disc, respond Burn without multisession .

some great freeware CD DVD Burning applications

    Download CDBurnerXP

for something simple and straightforward I would recommend CDBurnerXP
The Dropbox function is very useful.
  • BIN > ISO converter included
  • Download InfraRecorder

  • Support for not just ISO, but also BIN and CUE images

  • Burning on Dual Layer DVDs is supported
  • Download DeepBurner

has a very easy to use interface

  • Make ISO CDs.
  • Burn At Once

    BurnAware

DVDFlick uses IMGburn...I like ImgBurn (for burning iso’s) and CDBurnerXP works well for data or audio CD burning.
