Ten Diabetes Superfoods

Ten Diabetes Superfoods | Healthy and Green Living
Looking for a way to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and risks for life-threatening chronic diseases? People with many health conditions, including diabetes, need to closely monitor their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose. With this in mind, the American Diabetes Association released its list of diabetes superfoods earlier this week. The list offers 10 foods that have nutrients necessary for good diabetes management, including fiber, potassium, healthy fats, magnesium and antioxidants. The nutrients included in these foods can promote good health and help prevent some of diabetes serious complications, such as heart attacks and strokes.

The beauty of this list of superfoods is that all of the items have a low glycemic index (GI) and provide key nutrients–such as calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamins A, C and E–these nutrients are often lacking in a typical Western diet. The following list comes directly from the American Diabetes Association:

1. Beans. Whether you prefer kidney, pinto, navy or black beans, you can’t find more nutritious foods than beans. Their high fiber content gives you nearly one-third of your daily requirement in just 1/2 cup. Beans are also are good sources of magnesium and potassium, important nutrients for people with diabetes. Although they are considered starchy vegetables, a 1/2 cup provides as much protein as an ounce of meat without the saturated fat. To learn about cooking dried beans, see Cool Beans.

2. Dark green leafy vegetables. These powerhouse foods such as spinach, collards, and kale are so low in calories and carbohydrates, you can eat as much as you want.

3. Citrus fruit. Grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes provide part of your daily dose of soluble fiber–important for heart health–and vitamin C.

4. Sweet potatoes. This starchy vegetable is packed full of fiber and vitamin A (as carotenoids)–important for vision health. Try these in place of regular potatoes for a lower GI alternative.

5. Berries. Blueberries, strawberries and other varieties are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. Make a parfait alternating the fruit with light, non-fat yogurt for a new favorite dessert.

6. Tomatoes. Everyone can find a favorite with this old standby. No matter how you like your tomatoes–pureed, raw, or in a sauce–you’re eating vital nutrients like vitamin C, iron, and vitamin E.

7. Fish with omega-3s. Salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, halibut, and herring are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health. Stay away from the breaded and deep fried fish. They don’t count toward your goal of 6-9 ounces of fish per week.

8. Whole grains. These grains, such as pearled barley and oatmeal, are loaded with fiber, potassium, magnesium, chromium, omega-3 fatty acids and folate. The germ and bran of the whole grain contain the important nutrients a grain product has to offer. Processed grains, like bread made from enriched wheat flour, do not have these vital nutrients.

9. Nuts. An ounce of nuts can go a long way in providing key healthy fats along with hunger management. Nuts also give you a dose of magnesium and fiber. Some nuts and seeds, such as walnuts and flax seeds, also contain omega-3 fatty acids.

10. Fat-free milk and yogurt. Everyone knows dairy can help build strong bones and teeth. In addition to calcium, many fortified dairy products are a good source of vitamin D. More research is emerging on the connection between vitamin D and good health.

1st criticisms of the sexualisation of children for entertainment

written by Graham Greene

In 1937 Greene was a film reviewer for Night and Day magazine. In a review of the Shirley Temple vehicle Wee Willie Winkie, he wrote: "Her admirers – middle-aged men and clergymen – respond to her dubious coquetry, to the sight of her well-shaped and desirable little body, packed with enormous vitality, only because the safety curtain of story and dialogue drops between their intelligence and their desire."

Twentieth Century Fox sued on behalf of Temple, then aged eight, on the grounds that Greene had implied she played deliberately to "a public of licentious old men, ready to enjoy the fine flavour of such an unripe, charming little creature"

How To Resize Images And Maintain Original Sharpness

tip will only work with Photoshop CS
When you want to reduce an image go to the Image> Image Size menu. Click on Resample Image and choose Bicubic Sharper from the drop-down menu. This is the best setting for making sure that an image doesn't blur. The example photo of the flower started at 2,000 pixels across. I stepped it down to 250, and then again to 125 with almost no loss of sharpness. For enlarging an image select Bicubic Smoother.
Adobe Photoshop tutorial
Adobe Photoshop tutorial
keep in mind when resizing is to try to do it only once on an image. Many people will resize repeatedly as they search for the perfect fit for a design element, and then end up with an image with a lot of blur. It's always better to experiment on a duplicate of the image. Then, when you've settled on the final dimensions, you can go back to the original and resize it just once.

Turn A Photo Into A Sketch with Photoshop

Want to make some nice coloring books? The first step is to turn a photo into a sketch

Start with your selected photo.

STEP 1 - Duplicate The Background Layer
First duplicate the background layer. Go Layer> New> Layer via Copy. Now we have 2 layers, the Background Layer, and Layer 1.

STEP 2 - Desaturate The Photo
With Layer 1 selected, choose Image> Adjustments> Desaturate. This gives us a grayscale version of the photo.

STEP 3 - Duplicate Layer 1
At this point you must duplicate Layer 1. With Layer 1 selected, go Layer> New> Layer via Copy. Now we have 3 layers, the Background Layer, Layer 1 and Layer 2.

Next we'll be working with Layer 2.
Adobe Photoshop tutorial - Turn A Photo Into A Sketch For Making Coloring Books
STEP 4 - Invert Layer 2
With Layer 2 selected, go Image> Adjustments> Invert. This will make your photo look like a negative.

STEP 5 - Change The Layers Blend Mode To Color Dodge
In the Layers Palette change the Layers Blend Mode for this layer (Layer 2) to Color Dodge. This will make your photo almost completely white, but don't panic!

STEP 6 - Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter
Go Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. When the dialog box appears start by moving the Radius Slider all the way to the left. Once you've done that you can start to slowly move it to the right.

Now here comes some real Photoshop magic — because as you move the slider your sketch will start to appear. .. experiment and make sure you are getting the desired effect.

Bigger numbers create a more pronounced effect, but at some point this will turn your sketch back into a photo, which you don't want, so when you reach that point simply nudge the slider to the left just a little and that should do it!

For my apple sketch I used a Radius setting of 9.8 pixels.

Experiment With Settings
This technique will also work with the Motion Blur Filter and the Radial Blur Filter. The reason I mention this is sometimes an image will not work as expected, and so you have to try different methods.

Calling All Cezannes
Now print out your best sketches and create some nice coloring books, then give the kids some crayons

How To Wrap Text Around An Object In Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop tutorial - Wrap Text Around An Object
To begin open your image
create a new layer by going Layer> New> Layer.
On this layer you will place the type by choosing a font and typing the words of the phrase you want to wrap.
select a font in Photoshop go Window> Character. In the palette you'll see a list of your installed fonts. Make sure to tweak the settings so that the spacing and size and color are all appropriate
Bend That Text

Adobe Photoshop tutorial - Wrap Text Around An Object Make sure that your text layer is active and then go Layer> Type> Warp Text.
Now you need to choose a transform option from the Style popup menu. Choose Arch and then click Horizontal.
Adobe Photoshop tutorial - Wrap Text Around An Object
The Arch Style's default is to bend from left to top to right, but we want to bend from left to bottom to right, so we need to move the Bend Slider toward the left until we reach a negative number.

How To Fix Overexposed and Underexposed photos

Adobe Photoshop tutorial - How To Fix An Overexposed Photo
The above photo is overexposed. The photo suffers from some loss of detail and is just too bright. Below is the same photo after applying the Shadow/Highlight filter.
Adobe Photoshop tutorial - How To Fix An Overexposed Photo
The easiest way to fix an overexposed photo is to open it in Photoshop and choose Image> Adjustments> Shadow/Highlight (CS-onl
You'll see an immediate change in your photo and it will probably be too extreme, but just use this setting as a starting point. Photoshop ships with defaults that are often way over the top. Just play with the Amount Slider and the Tonal Width Slider in both the Shadows and the Highlights until you find just the right balance.

Can Turmeric Relieve Pain? One Doctor's Opinion

Four in the morning, four more at night. That's eight big mustard-yellow capsules every day. They contain nothing but turmeric,

But what got me interested in Jerry's turmeric wasn't his testimonials or even his personality — it was seeing him bounce back from surgery.

had two bad hips; the joints didn't form quite right as he grew up. They degenerated and started to hurt as he entered his 60s. When he first started coming to me, I gave him the usual anti-inflammatory medications we use for arthritis pain. He had no side effects, but he wasn't helped much either, so he stopped the pills and lived with the pain. Then he found turmeric.
Soon enough, there was no pain at all. And his lower back and hands, which ached before, were also now pain-free

According to a new study, a dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime can easily outperform a cough suppressant.

did a better job of reducing the severity and frequency of night-time coughs and it also improved sleep quality for children

Pertinently, Dextromethorphan (DM), the ingredient in many cough mixtures had no significant impact on symptoms, whereas, honey has been used in medicine for centuries.

Traditionally honey has not only been used to treat coughs and bronchitis but also to assist the healing of wounds. And, many adults often mix the sweet sticky substance together with boiling water, lemon, ginger or brandy.

please remember that honey is not suitable for under 1s as it can cause a food poisoning called infant botulism

Theory of Intelligence

Funny..yet does it hold a speck of truth? Read and be mesmerized!
In one episode of ‘Cheers’, Cliff is seated at the bar describing the Buffalo Theory to his buddy, Norm.
clipped from www.officegimp.com

Well you see, Norm, it’s like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the heard is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first ..

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.

Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.’

Dropper Loop

clipped from www.ozfire.com.au

Dropper Loop
A better method of forming a loop, or loops, in the line above the sinker is to use the old Dropper Loop. This draws into a knot that stands out at right angles to the line.

  1. Form a loop in the line.
  2. Take hold of one side of the loop, and make 6 or more turns around the line itself.
  3. This is the tricky part - keep open the point where the turns, or twists, are being made.
  4. Take hold of the other side of the loop, and pull it through the centre opening. use a finger in this loop so that it is not lost.
  5. Hold this loop between the teeth. Pull gently on both ends of the line, making the turns gather and pack down on either side of the loop.
  6. Draw up the knot by pulling the lines as tightly as possible. The turns will make the loop stand at right angles to the line.

Surgeons End Loop

clipped from www.ozfire.com.au

Surgeons End Loop
Loops are made for the purpose of attaching leaders, traces or other terminal tackle. They have the advantage that they can be tied quickly and in the dark.

Take the end of the line and double it to form a loop of the required size.

  1. Tie an Overhand Knot at the desired point, leaving the loop open.
  2. Bring the doubled line through the loop again.
  3. Hold the line and the end part together, and pull the loop to form a knot.

Scaffold Knot

Scaffold Knot
This is a much simpler variant. In all likelihood, this Grant's Uni-Knot. I have used it for more than fifty years and it has never failed me, whether tied in 1kg or 50kg monofilament. It was taught to me by the late Wally Kerr, a top flathead fisherman.

  1. Pass a 15cm loop of line through the eye.
  2. Lock the upper part between thumb and forefinger, making a loop.
  3. Make two more loops over the double part, holding them too, between thumb and forefinger.
  4. Pass the end through the two loops just made, plus the first loop made in step2.
  5. The formed knot can now be drawn into shape, and worked down against the eye of the hook or swivel.

Hangman's Knot

There are at least 6 variations of the Hangman's Knot, - all of them excellent for terminal tackle, swivels and hooks. The "standard" Hangman's Knot holds only five turns when tied in monofilament nylon. If tied in rope, and used for its stated purpose, it takes eight turns.

  1. Pass a 15cm loop of line through the eye.
  2. Bring the end back on itself, passing it under the doubled part.
  3. Make five loops over the doubled part.
  4. The formed knot is worked into shape.
  5. The knot is sent down the line, against the eye of the hook or swivel.

The Palomar Knot is another very simple knot for terminal tackle. It is regarded by the International Game Fish Association consistently as the strongest knot known. It's great virtue is that it can safely be tied at night with a minimum of practice.

  1. Double about 12.5cm of line, and pass through the eye.
  2. Tie a simple Overhand Knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoide twisting the lines.
  3. Pull the end of loop down, passing it completely over the hook.
  4. Pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot.

Another beautifully simple knotthat can be tied in the dark, The Jansik Special is a high strength knot tied as follows:

  1. Put 15cm of line through the eye of the hook.
  2. Bring it around in a circle and put the end through again.
  3. Making a second circle, pass then end through a third time.
  4. Holding the three circles of line against each other, wrap the end three times around the circles.
  5. Either hold the hook steady with pliers, or make it fast to boat's rigging or safety lines.

North Korea celebrates 4th July with big nasty candles

clipped from news.bbc.co.uk

Seven Scud-type ballistic missiles with a range of about 500km (312 miles) were fired in an apparent act of defiance against the US, on 4 July.

North Korea is banned from all ballistic missile-related activities under UN sanctions.

The sanctions were strengthened after the communist nation carried out a second underground nuclear test in May.

an apparent message of defiance to the United States on its Independence Day.

North Korea's state news agency carried no reports on the launches. But the North had warned ships to stay away from its east coast through July 10 for military exercises — an indication it was planning launches.

clipped from www.dailymail.co.uk
If you're scared of heights, it may be time to look away now.
Not content with having the tallest building in America, the owners of Sears Tower in Chicago have installed four glass box viewing platforms which stick out of the building 103 floors up.
The balconies are suspended 1,353 feet in the air and jut out four feet from the building's Skydeck.
