Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Guitar Tunings

Rock `n` Band: Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Guitar Tunings
Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Guitar Tunings

There are many different guitar tunings that are used in Rock and Metal music besides standard tuning. Guitar players in these genres like to use these tunings because they give a heavier and darker sound to their music.

Some of the more popular tunings used are Dropped D, Dropped C, Dropped B, E Flat, D, C and open G. Here are the descriptions of how the strings should be tuned and some of the bands that use them.

Dropped D tuning:

E ----------1st string

B ----------2nd string

G ----------3rd string

D ----------4th string

A ----------5th string

D ----------6th string (thickest)

This tuning enables power chords to be played with a single finger on the lowest three strings and produces a dark sound with it. If you're music doesn't fit together with this dark sound, you can place a capo on the 2nd fret and can still easily play power chords.

Some bands that use Dropped D tuning are:

Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Godsmack, Led Zepplin, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Silverchair, Soundgarden and Velvet Revolver.

Dropped C tuning:

D ----------1st string

A ----------2nd string

F ----------3rd string

C ----------4th string

G ----------5th string

C ----------6th string (thickest)

Dropped C tuning is the Dropped D with each string lowered one whole step. Dropped C tuning produces a very low and heavy sound and is used by many of the new Heavy Metal bands.

Some bands that use Dropped C tuning are:

30 Seconds to Mars, Atreyu, Buckethead, Bullet for My Valentine, Children of Bodom, Godsmack, Bad Religion, Metallica, Mudvayne, P.O.D., Papa Roach, Rammstein, Shadows Fall, System of a Down, Three Days Grace and Ozzy Osbourne.

Dropped B tuning:

C# ----------1st string

G# ----------2nd string

E ----------3rd string

B ----------4th string

F# ---------5th string

B ----------6th string (thickest)

This tuning will need heavier gauge strings to be effective. Also you might have to widen the string grooves as well as adjust the tension in the neck of your guitar.

Some bands that use Dropped B tuning are:

Audioslave, Limp Bizkit, Machine Head, Mudvayne, Slipknot and Stone Sour.

Eb tuning:

Eb ---------1st string

Bb ---------2nd string

Gb ---------3rd string

Db ---------4th string

Ab ---------5th string

Eb ---------6th string (thickest)

This tuning is Standard tuning turned down a half step. There are a few reasons that bands use this tuning instead of Standard tuning. One reason is to sound heavier by using heavy gauge strings. By tuning down a half step it is easier to bend these heavy gauged strings. Another reason why some bands use this tuning is to compliment the lead singers voice.

Bands that use Eb tuning are:

Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, Megadeth, Metallica, Motorhead, Nirvana, Poison, Slayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stone Sour, Van Halen, Weezer and Yngwie Malmsteen.

D tuning:

D ----------1st string

A ----------2nd string

F ----------3rd string

C ----------4th string

G ----------5th string

D ----------6th string (thickest)

D tuning is also known as whole step down tuning and as you have probably already guessed, it's Standard tuning tuned down a whole step. D tuning has been used mainly in Heavy Metal music.

Bands that have used D tuning are:

Alice in Chains, The Beatles, Bullet For My Valentine, Bob Dylan, Children of Bodom, Dream Theater, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Racer X and Soundgarden.

C tuning:

C ----------1st string

G ----------2nd string

Eb ---------3rd string

Bb ---------4th string

F ----------5th string

C ----------6th string (thickest)

C tuning also produces a low sound that is mostly used by Hard Rock and Metal bands. The tuning is 2 whole steps below Standard tuning, which gives it a heavy sound but still maintains the same intervals as Standard tuning.

Bands that have used C tuning are:

Atreyu, Black Sabbath, Bullet For My Valentine, Deftones, Dream Theater, Jimi Hendrix, P.O.D., Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot, Steve Vai and The Who.

G tuning:

D ----------1st string

B ----------2nd string

G ----------3rd string

D ----------4th string

G ----------5th string

D ----------6th string (thickest)

Other than the Drop D tuning, G Tuning is one of the most popular alternate guitar tunings.

Some bands that have used G tuning are:

The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam.

the bush years map of changes

clipped from www.theatlantic.com
Since 2000, America has changed in small ways, in big ways, and in ways that seem innocent enough now but no doubt herald some radical disruptions to come. Many more people are poor, uninsured, and in prison. Many more are billionaires. The burden of health-care costs has grown heavier, and so have we. We charge more, save less, and play a lot more video games. Even the things that haven’t changed much—like the amount of oil we consume, or the price of cocaine, or the size of our military—reflect not so much stasis as unsustainable trajectories. For Obama, responding to these problems will require breaking deep national addictions—to oil, to etherealized finance, to profligacy of all kinds—and, somehow, easing the tremens along the way. Perhaps, in doing so, he should heed a warning Roosevelt issued on the campaign trail: “Without leadership alert and sensitive to change,” he said, “we are bogged up or lose our way.”

How a dolphin prepares the perfect cuttlefish meal

clipped from scienceblogs.com
a single female bottlenose,
has developed a way of hunting cuttlefish. Not only does she successfully capture them, but she has learned how to prepare them for the perfect meal, with all the skill of a master chef.
Dolphin_eat_cuttlefish.jpg
she flushed the cuttlefish out from its hiding place
dived downwards and pinned it to the floor with her beak
jabbed downwards with a sharp thrust that killed the cuttlefish instantly. The thrust breaks the cuttlebone, a hard structure inside the cuttlefish's body; it snaps so violently that nearby divers can clearly hear the click.
getting rid of the ink would make the meal both tastier and easier to digest
allowed the cuttlefish back to the sand, where she raked its back along the ocean floor. That flayed the skin off its back and released the broken cuttlebone
deboned her prey
she finally settled down to eat her well-won catch
This remarkable series of behaviours are further proof, if proof were needed, for the extraordinarily flexible intelligence of these animals

How To Download Music From Deezer, Pandora And More

clipped from www.makeuseof.com
Music into Firefox

Websites such as Deezer, Pandora, imeem, Last.fm (and others) all serve free streaming music - often bundled with certain restrictions that reduce their convenience to users. A number of separate various applications exist to download from specific sites (such as Freezer which exists to download from Deezer, Jiwa, and imeem only), so their range is limited.

Today we’ll show you an all-inclusive method that can grab songs from most, if not all, websites. The drawback? No automatic naming, the files are in FLV format rather than MP3, and you’ll have to drag them out of the cache yourself.

Firefox tweaks that will double your browser speed

A handful of Firefox tweaks that will double your browser speed : Boy Genius Report
Firefox users take note: You need to do this. Now. As in, this instant. More savvy users are probably already familiar with editing Firefox’s configuration file but whether you’re a computer rookie or a seasoned veteran, Gnoted has issued a handful of tweaks that really get Firefox cooking. As much as we all love the fox, it can get a bit slow on occasion - especially if you’re like us and have 35 open tabs spread across four windows at any given time. By tweaking the way Firefox handles some caching functions, you can dramatically improve page load speed and even prevent Firefox from hogging your system resources while minimized. If you don’t currently have any experience playing with your configuration file, don’t be scared. Just follow the simple instructions, take your time and if you want a security blanket to squeeze, jot down each setting before you change it so you can always restore the default configuration if need be. So without further ado, hit the jump and get tweaking - just remember to restart Firefox when you’re done.

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature

1. Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the adress bar in the browser.
2. Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer”
3. Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)
Increase the Speed at Which Firefox loads pages

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit Enter.
(Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)

2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.

This means it will make 10 requests at once.

3. Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“;.(Zero)

This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now.
Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Interger or String

network.dns.disableIPv6: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5“; (Five)
“plugin.expose_full_path”: set “true”.
“ui.submenuDelay”: set “0; (zero)
Reduce RAM usage to 10MB when Firefox is minimized:

This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:

1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.

Scientists open doors with the power of the mind

Scientists open doors with the power of the mind

A mock-up of a home controlled by the power of thought has been successfully piloted by a hospital in Italy

Scientists showed that people could open doors or operate lights, a telephone, a small robot and even a robotic hand by wearing a strip of electrodes on their head to pick up brainwaves that signal "interest" and send them to a computer that interprets them as desired actions.

we are capable of 85% accuracy in the computer interpreting a subject's desired action
"A 10-minute familiarisation session is usually enough,"
"The type of brainwave we pinpoint is common to nearly all people when making this 'focusing interest' thought."

To demonstrate, one of the Santa Lucia team wore a fabric headset connected to the BCI and could open doors, switch on a fan or adjust lights by concentrating on a menu on a monitor. Two to three attempts are usually needed for each action.

He predicts that within three years such a system would be of practical

Rudd confirms $4bn rescue for construction industry

Rudd will attempt to protect 50,000 construction jobs by creating a $4 billion partnership with the major banks to finance office buildings, shopping centres
Taxpayers will provide $2 billion
a third of jobs in the commercial property sector, which employed 150,000 people, were at risk because of weak demand and the tight availability of credit.
The Government said this week it feared a credit shortfall resulting from the withdrawal of cash-strapped foreign banks from the Australian market.
About $75 billion of outstanding loans are due to be refinanced over the next two years.
"The Government will not sit idly by and watch these jobs and small- and medium-size businesses be wiped out by fluctuations in global credit markets," he said.

RETAIL giant Harvey Norman is the first major retailer to succumb to the global credit crisis with the closure of its Domayne Campbelltown store, with the loss of 40 jobs.
And in a futher blow, the nation's largest discount retailer - Australian Discount Retail (ADR) has collaped with debts of almost $100 million, leaving 2700 full-time staff facing an uncertain future.

Yesterday's announcements are the first wave of job losses as retailers struggle with plummeting sales as the credit crunch deepens. Harvey Norman chairman Gerry Harvey warned of further closures as the credit crunch bites, with the future of as many as 10 stores in doubt by the end of the year.

Mr Harvey described the current financial crisis as the worst he had seen in 47 years of business.

"I've been doing exactly what Mr Rudd wants me to do and I can't keep doing it indefinitely . . . I've been listening to him and doing it but I can't keep doing it because crunch time is coming".

The collapse of ADR places a question mark over the future of hundreds of full-time jobs at 130 Crazy Clarks, Go Lo, Sams Warehouse stores across NSW.

The company is Australia's largest discount retailer and employs 2,700 staff in 402 stores national.

Only Chickenfeed, while a part of the ADR group with 28 stores in Tasmania, is not in administration or receivership.

ADR was placed in receivership yesterday with debts of $96 million owed to secured creditors NAB Capital, ANZ and HBOS

Origins of 10 Curious Phrases

mental_floss Blog » The Quick 10: The Origins of 10 Curious Phrases
1. “At the drop of a hat” comes from the days of gunfights on the frontier, when the drop of a hat was the signal for the shootout to begin.
sheep2. “Beat the tar out of” is thought to have come from sheep farmers, who would slather tar on a sheep’s cut when it got nicked from shearing. Later, they would have to beat the tar out.
3. “Buckle down to work” originally meant a knight buckling down all of his armor before a battle.
4. “As fit as a fiddle” used to be “as fit as a fiddler,” because a fiddler jumped and danced around so much while playing, he had to be in good shape.
5. “To skin a cat” doesn’t actually mean a feline. It means a catfish – the skins of catfish are notoriously tough and hard to remove for cooking.
6. I always thought “start from scratch” referred to baking, but I suppose even the baking reference had to come from somewhere. It came from handicapping competitors during races: a line is scratched in the dirt; the person who starts there gets no special advantage.
7. “Under the weather” is a sea-faring term which means you’re at sea when the weather changes for the worse.
8. “Paddywagon” is really a not-very P.C. term – it refers to the old stereotype that Irish people (“Paddy” being a common Irish name/nickname) tend to get arrested the most because of their hot tempers.
9. “Kick the bucket” comes from slaughterhouses, where, after slaughter, hogs would be hung up by a pulley with a weight called a bucket. I wonder if this goes back even further – perhaps a bucket was actually used for the weight once upon a time.
10. “Eating humble pie” came from “umble pie,” a meat dish made of entrails and other animal leftovers. Women and children, AKA “umbles,” had to eat these parts because all of the best cuts of meat went to the man of the house.

Man Builds Noah's Ark

Man Builds Noah's Ark
(exact scale given in Bible)
Working Replica of Noah's Ark Opened In SCHAGEN, Netherlands.

The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was opened the first crowd of curious townsfolk to behold the wonder. Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark , built by Dutch Creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.
The ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house. Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold. A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine.
Construction began in May 2005.
There is enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater where kids can watch a video that tells the story of Noah and his ark.

Visitors on the first day were stunned. 'It's past comprehension'

Christian sex suggestions - The knee trembler

spicy!!!

Position #50: The Knee-Trembler

Doggy on stairs :-)

rear entry that is done on a set of stairs. To get into position the husband and wife both find a set of stairs that looks inviting.
wife will kneel on a higher step and then the husband will kneel on a step that is one lower than his wife. This usually results in the parts lining up okay
husband is then ready to insert. The great thing about this position is that the husband doesn’t necessarily have to do the thrusting. The wife can control the thrusting if she wants to, by simply backing down
If there are banister rails to hold on to, then this position can rock! If not, then you may need to so at a slower pace, to reduce the chances of someone tumbling down the stairs.
Cons: If your stairs are wooden or hard, you may get sore knees. No face to face kissing in this one.

God’s view of sex…Song of Solomon

BibleGateway.com: Search for a Bible passage in over 35 languages and 50 versions.
Song of Solomon 1

1 Solomon's Song of Songs.

Beloved [a]
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
for your love is more delightful than wine.

3 Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like perfume poured out.
No wonder the maidens love you!

4 Take me away with you—let us hurry!
Let the king bring me into his chambers.

Friends
We rejoice and delight in you [b] ;
we will praise your love more than wine.

Beloved
How right they are to adore you!

5 Dark am I, yet lovely,
O daughters of Jerusalem,
dark like the tents of Kedar,
like the tent curtains of Solomon. [c]

6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because I am darkened by the sun.
My mother's sons were angry with me
and made me take care of the vineyards;
my own vineyard I have neglected.

7 Tell me, you whom I love, where you graze your flock
and where you rest your sheep at midday.
Why should I be like a veiled woman
beside the flocks of your friends?
Friends
8 If you do not know, most beautiful of women,
follow the tracks of the sheep
and graze your young goats
by the tents of the shepherds.
Lover
9 I liken you, my darling, to a mare
harnessed to one of the chariots of Pharaoh.

10 Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings,
your neck with strings of jewels.

11 We will make you earrings of gold,
studded with silver.
Beloved
12 While the king was at his table,
my perfume spread its fragrance.

13 My lover is to me a sachet of myrrh
resting between my breasts.

14 My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms
from the vineyards of En Gedi.
Lover
15 How beautiful you are, my darling!
Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes are doves.
Beloved
16 How handsome you are, my lover!
Oh, how charming!
And our bed is verdant.
Lover
17 The beams of our house are cedars;
our rafters are firs.

Footnotes:

1. Song of Solomon 1:1 Primarily on the basis of the gender of the Hebrew pronouns used, male and female speakers are indicated in the margins by the captions Lover and Beloved respectively. The words of others are marked Friends . In some instances the divisions and their captions are debatable.
2. Song of Solomon 1:4 The Hebrew is masculine singular.
3. Song of Solomon 1:5 Or Salma

Virtual gallery zooms in on masterpieces with startling detail helped by Google Earth

teardrop

Some of Europe's greatest paintings can be viewed in minuscule detail thanks to a partnership between a famous museum and Google Earth.

Works by artists including Rubens, Rembrandt and Gosch are on display in a virtual gallery.

Users of Google Earth can click on Spain before zooming on to the Prado Museum and visiting the 14 works.

A detailed view

'There is no better way to pay tribute to the great masters of the history of art than to universalize knowledge of their works using optimum conditions,' Prado director Miguel Zugaza said.

'With Google Earth technology it is possible to enjoy these magnificent works in a way never previously possible, obtaining details impossible to appreciate through firsthand observation,' he said.

'Normally you have to stand a good distance away from these works, but this offers you the chance to see details that you could only see from a big ladder placed right beside them.'

Chomsky Condemns U.S. and Israel For Civilian Deaths in Gaza Strip

Chomsky Condemns U.S. and Israel For Civilian Deaths in Gaza Strip - The Tech
At a talk last night about the current situation in Gaza, Professor of Linguistics Noam A. Chomsky came down hard on Israel for its frequent violence against Palestinian civilians and chastised the United States for enabling the Jewish state to carry out these actions with impunity. He also used the opportunity to touch upon broader issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The talk, which took place at Sloan’s Wong Auditorium, was part of the Center of International Studies’ Starr Forum lecture series

Chomsky, who first made a name for himself in the fields of linguistics and psychology, is well-known in the political community for his strong criticism of Israel and its supporters. Word of a lecture by Chomsky always spreads fast, so it was no surprise that when he took the podium just after 4 p.m., the room’s nearly three hundred chairs were all occupied — with more watching a video feed in the lobby.

His antipathy toward Israeli actions was immediately clear as he opened his remarks by referring to Dec. 27, 2008 as the first day of the “U.S.-Israel attack on helpless Palestinians” in the Gaza Strip. Calling the military and media campaigns meticulously planned, he likened current Israeli actions in Gaza to its attacks in Lebanon during the summer of 2006. Both actions have come under fire for large numbers of civilian causalities and with allegations of disproportionate use of force, while Israel has maintained that its actions have always been aimed at militant targets.

Chomsky, however, stated that the months of planning behind the ongoing incursion mean that one can be confident that all Israeli actions have been done purposefully. He claimed that the Israelis intentionally scheduled the initial bombardment at a time when children would be returning from school and adults would be milling about the streets.

He then proceeded to recall two incidents in which ships with humanitarian aid were prevented from reaching the Gaza Strip. Chomsky noted that the ships “intended to violate Israel’s criminal blockade” around the Gaza Strip, and that the Israeli government “provided routine lines,” saying, among other things, one of the ships encroached on its waters without establishing proper communication.

“Even though ramming a boat in international waters is worse than piracy off the coast of Somalia,” said Chomsky, “the event was hardly reported.”

Later stating that the U.S. media, just like any other media, is frequently a reflection of the norms established by its government, he ultimately concluded that the Israeli actions — and the underreporting of them — were nothing new.

“At most they should be greeted with a yawn,” he said.

Chomsky grasped for an appropriate word to describe the magnitude of Israeli actions. Dismissing the words “terrorism” and “aggression” as insufficient, he recounted past Israeli incursions into Lebanon and called the current attacks “familiar” in capturing the magnitude of the Israeli offensive. He also flashed back to the 2005 Israeli disengagement from Gaza, when Israel removed its settlements from the area.

“Ariel Sharon, the patron-saint of the disengagement,” he said, “thought it had made more sense to convert Gaza into the world’s largest prison.”

At the same time, Chomsky criticized Israel for setting its sights on the West Bank, where he believes it hopes to annex land carved out by settlements and a barrier currently under construction. He added that, on top of that, Israel hopes to acquire land in the Jordan River Valley on the eastern edge of the West Bank and fragment Palestinian land through settlements and checkpoints which “make life impossible.”

Meanwhile, Chomsky said that Israel continued to kill and harass the inhabitants of Gaza, with U.S. support, even after the disengagement. After Hamas was elected to a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council, Israel instituted a blockade on Gaza.

“This was the cost of disobeying the demands of the master,” Chomsky said.

Chomsky’s harshest criticism was reserved for the unwavering relationship between Israel and the United States, which he frequently termed “outlaw states.” At many points throughout his speech, Chomsky recalled elements of the U.S.-Israel relationship, including occasions on which the United States has used its veto power to block U.N. Security Council resolutions condemnatory of Israel.

Noting the hundreds of Palestinian civilian casualties in the ongoing attacks, he criticized the United States for initially declining to back a U.N. ceasefire. He was also unhappy that Barack Obama sympathized with the Israelis. He blamed the United States and Israel for breaking the Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreement established in June, as well as thwarting multiple peace plans that have surfaced over the past decade.

Still, while Chomsky argued that Israel has preferred expansion to security, he declined to say Israel does not aim to make peace.

“It’s not that Israel doesn’t want peace”, said Chomsky. “Of course, it wants peace. Everyone wants peace. Even Hitler wanted peace.”

Chomsky’s solution to the decades-long conflict requires the United States to join the rest of the international community in condemning Israel for its actions against civilians. Indeed, he stated that although Hamas rocket attacks have been criminal, the Israeli use of force in the ongoing conflict has not been justified because there are alternative options.

“Israel has a straightforward route to defending itself: end criminal actions in the occupied territories”, he said. Among other things, Chomsky hopes Israel will end the blockade on Gaza and accept offers by Arab neighbors to establish a Palestinian state on borders close to the Green Line. Concluding, he said a Israeli military victory in Gaza would leave Israel with an image as a “blood-stained monster.”

“Supporters of Israel are in reality supporters of its moral degeneration,” he said.

world's most beautiful castles= Château de Chillon

Lake Geneva, Montreaux. Excavations here have turned up evidence of a Bronze Age settlement, but the castle as it now stands was created between the 12th and 18th centuries. Its popularity got a huge boost in 1816. That year, following a visit, Lord Byron published his long poem "The Prisoner of Chillon"; the work refers to the "seven pillars of Gothic mold" that stand in "Chillon's dungeons deep and old.

The Floating Villages of Lake Titicaca

Waking up to see the world floating past your window would fill most people with a deep foreboding and have them running outside to see what catastrophe had just occurred – was it shock flooding or a nightmarish storm that carried your house away? Or it could be just another ordinary day on a buoyant bed of reeds in Lake Titicaca.

Sitting high in the Peruvian landscape at 3,812 m (12,464 ft), are around 40 fully-functioning floating islands. Initially created by the Uros people of Peru in Inca times, these wonderful islands stemmed from the need to escape incessant fighting and trouble on the mainland. This way the quiet Uros tribe could, quite literally, steer clear of aggressors, and because it has worked so well for the inhabitants for centuries there seems no reason to move to solid ground.

Spinning ice disc phenomenon seen in British river

Rare phenomenon of perfect circle of spinning ice spotted in River Otter in Devon

The House That Always Faces The Sun

clipped from deputy-dog.com
it’s surprising that there’s so little (english) information available about this house as it seems to be such a piece of engineering brilliance and a building which, when designed, was way ahead of its time. it was built and lived in by an italian ship engineer by the name of angelo invernizzi (along with assistance from architect ettore fagiuoli) between the years of 1929 & 1935 and can still be found in marcellise, italy.
the top half of the building rotates around the centre of the circluar track on which it rests (which happens to form the roof of the lower, static half of the building), much like the hands of a clock
the ‘tower’ which forms the pivot is 43 metres tall and the power needed to move the structure is generated by 2 motors (3 horsepower in total): a full revolution of the 1′500ton building would take just over 9hrs, travelling at a speed of 4mm per second, unless of course the rotation was delibrately slowed.

Thought for the Day - joke

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa.

'The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago....Red meat is awful....Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining....Chinese food is loaded with MSG....High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in drinking water....But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it.
Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?'

After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said,
'Wedding Cake?'

To See Things Like Nobody Else - a spookfish

clipped from blog.wired.com

Spookfish Sees Things Like Nobody Else Ever Has

Spookfish
Of all the animals in the world, the lowly spookfish has the oddest eyes — compound mechanisms that bear more than a passing resemblance to rearview mirrors
The bottom half of its eyes point upwards. The upper half point downwards, and are backed with a layer of reflective guanine crystals that bounce a focused image into the retina
In nearly 500 million years of vertebrate evolution, and many thousands of vertebrate species living and dead, this is the only one known to have solved the fundamental optical problem faced by all eyes — how to make an image — using a mirror," said Julian Partridge, a University of Bristol vision ecologist, in a press release

Like the eyes, the specimen itself was unique: until Tubingen University neurobiologist Hans-Joachim Wagner captured one off the island of Tonga, a living spookfish had never been seen.
