ensure your router's safety

clipped from antivirus.about.com

  1. Change the default password to a secure password.

  2. Disable Remote Web Administration.

  3. Disable Wireless Administration so that an ethernet connection is required to access the device console.

  4. Update your router's firmware. Make a note of the version and date; check your router periodically to ensure it hasn't been changed. If a change is discovered, visit your router vendor's website and install a new firmware update (be sure to reboot the router afterwards).

Home and SOHO users will find more helpful router tips in Bradley Mitchell's Tips for Maintaining Wireless Home Networks.
