Freak monster waves spotted from space

"Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously but, until now, no one quite believed them. "
clipped from news.bbc.co.uk

The shady phenomenon of freak waves as tall as 10 storey buildings has finally been proved, the European Space Agency (Esa) said on Wednesday.
Wave, PA
Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously but, until now, no one quite believed them.
As part of a project called MaxWave - which was set up to test the rumours - two Esa satellites surveyed the oceans.
During a three week period they detected 10 giant waves, all of which were over 25m (81ft) high.
Strange disappearances
Over the last two decades more than 200 super-carriers - cargo ships over 200m long - have been lost at sea. Eyewitness reports suggest many were sunk by high and violent walls of water that rose up out of calm seas.
But for years these tales of towering beasts were written off as fantasy; and many marine scientists clung to statistical models stating monstrous deviations from the normal sea state occur once every 1,000 years.

Intricate Rainforest Sculptures of Olinda

more: Ricketts gained his deep understanding of Aboriginal culture during frequent trips to Central Australia
, where he lived with the Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte people from 1949 -1960. They soon adopted him as one of their own and willingly posed for the sculptures that would become their legacy.
William Ricketts died in 1993 at the ripe old age of 94 but he will always be remembered as his figure, too, is dotted around the tranquil fern gully, forever connected to both the family and the land he so loved.
Welcoming Arms

Hidden deep within a lush Australian rainforest are a set of mystical Aborigine sculptures seemingly merged into the natural surroundings. Moss covered torsos of men, women and children protrude from tree trunks and boulders. Some reach heavenward with widespread wings, others envelop each other protectively – all are symbols of the relationship the indigenous Australian Aborigines have with nature.

Aboriginal Man

These mesmerizing sculptures are the work of William Ricketts, a rare Australian born in 1898 who was in awe of the connection the Aborigine people have with the land.

Entrance Guardians

The clay figures, which Ricketts created on site in his home on Mount Dandenong, near Olinda, express his devout philosophy that all people need to act as custodians of the natural environment just as the Aboriginal people do.

How and Why We Support Our False Beliefs

clipped from www.buffalo.edu
data shows substantial support for a cognitive theory known as 'motivated
reasoning,' which suggests that rather than search rationally for information
that either confirms or disconfirms a particular belief, people actually seek
out information that confirms what they already believe.

"In fact," he says, "for the most part people completely ignore contrary information.

"We form emotional attachments that get wrapped up in our personal identity and
sense of morality, irrespective of the facts of the matter.
One of the most curious "false beliefs" of the 2004 presidential election, they
say, was a strong and resilient belief among many Americans that Saddam Hussein
was linked to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"This misperception that Hussein was responsible for the Twin Tower terrorist
attacks was very persistent, despite all the evidence suggesting that no link
existed,"
it helped citizens make sense of the Bush Administration's decision to go to war
against Iraq.

Idyllic Latvian Village

clipped from englishrussia.com

A Latvian billionaire implemented a fantastic project nearby Cēsis town in Latvia. If you’ve believed there is no Sun City, only Sin City, now you can see that you’ve been totally wrong. There people live according to special rules and have a routine different from those of common human beings. The three-storey houses are constructed of green materials and are located on various height so that the dwellers don’t see other houses from the windows of their own. If you want to live in a hobbit hut, you know now where to head.
