chimps show "grief"

UNITED in what appears to be profound grief, more than a dozen chimpanzees stood in silence from their enclosure as the body of one of their own was wheeled past
A chimp was mourned after dying in an African zoo

When a chimp called Dorothy, in her late 40s, died of heart failure, her fellow apes seemed to be stricken by sorrow.

As they wrapped their arms around each other, Dorothy's keeper gave her an affectionate stroke on the head and settled her into the wheelbarrow that carried her to her grave.

Until recently, describing scenes like this in terms of human emotions such as grief would have been dismissed by scientists

But growing evidence suggests higher emotions, such as grieving and a understanding of death, may not be a human preserve.

Chimpanzees
have often been seen apparently grieving for family and tribe members by entering a period of mourning after a death

    Tiny, tiny, tiny houses

    clipped from www.sfgate.com

I received a note from a reader last week after my post on mobile dwelling designer Christopher Deam reminding me of Tumbleweed, the Tiny House Company, founded by Jay Shafer, who builds and sells -- you guessed it -- little dwellings ranging in size from 65 to 372 square feet.

The Tiny Houses don't require building permits because they're on wheels, so they can literally be placed in a backyard (yes, albeit a very large backyard). The Small Houses are more like real dwellings with a separate room and an option for a 1st floor bedroom.

The XS-House measures 65 square feet.

The Weebee comes in at 102 square feet.

San Francisco's Modern Cabana offers its very own modern rendition. These range from 120 to 300 square feet.

The small-living-space movement is growing fast. Check out Small House Home & House, This Tiny House, and Container House, just for starters.
