Funny New Year quotes

Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to.

The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This drunkenness culminates on New Year's Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you're married to.

Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!

Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.

I'm a little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit rounder, but still none the wiser.

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other.

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions.

All But Decapitated, Boy, 9, Recovers

clipped from www.cbsnews.com
Jordan Taylor is being called a medical miracle.
The nine-year-old
boy was nearly decapitated in a car crash three months ago, but doctors reattached his head to his neck and now he's made virtually a full recovery.
Jordan was buckled up in the back seat, but the impact caused an unthinkable injury.

"The energy basically made his head lift up off of his neck, and then move forward,"
It's called orthopedic decapitation. Jordan's spinal cord remained intact, but his skull separated from his neck.

"All of the connective tissue that essentially keeps your head connected to your neck was destroyed,
Doctors were able to reattach his skull with a metal plate and titanium rods, enabling Jordan to start defying overwhelming odds.

rap has origins in Scotland

clipped from www.telegraph.co.uk
Professor
argued that so-called rap battles, where two or more performers trade elaborate insults, derive from the ancient Caledonian art of "flyting".
Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where it was adopted and developed by slaves, emerging many years later as rap.
a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem's 2002 movie 8 Mile.

Niépce's biggest breakthrough came in 1822, when he created a permanent image by exposing coated pewter plates to a camera image, using the vapors from heated iodine crystals to darken the silver.

The exposure time for the first photo lasted eight hours -- so the sun had time to move from east to west, appearing to shine on both sides of the building.

17 year old helps send 400 stoves to Darfur

clipped from edition.cnn.com
The $30 stoves help keep Darfur's women safe by reducing their time away from the refugee camps.

People living in the camps are relatively safe, but there is danger for the women and young girls who leave the compounds in search of firewood to cook meals. Firewood in the desert is scarce, and the women often have to walk up to seven hours to gather enough wood to bring back to their camps. Some women have been targeted, sexually assaulted and killed.

Spencer Brodsky, 17, learned about the violence and decided to raise money to purchase fuel-efficient stoves to send to Darfur. The stoves burn 75 percent less firewood.

At $30 per stove, Brodsky has raised enough money to ship 420 stoves to Darfur.

"These women are so grateful for this initiative and actually thankful to the American people who are so passionate to let these women know that there is help out there," Mohamed said.

Scientists Find 2,700-Year-marijuana stash

weed.jpg
Scientists have discovered two pounds of a dried plant that turned out to be the oldest marijuana in the world. Inside one of the Yanghai Tombs excavated in the Gobi Desert

At first, the researchers thought the dried weed was coriander. Then they spent 10 months getting the cannabis from the tomb in China to a secret lab in England. Finally, the team put the stash through “microscopic botanical analysis” including carbon dating and genetic analysis, and discovered the stash was really pot.

The fact that the weed had a chemical known for psychoactive properties called tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase, or THC, led scientists to believe the
community probably used it for medicinal and recreational purposes. According to professor Ethan Russo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany, someone had picked out all the parts of the plant that are less psychoactive before placing it in the grave, therefore the dead man probably didn’t grow his hemp merely to make clothes.

Origami: Most Amazing Paper Sculptures

History: Origami originated in China as "Zhe Zhi" in the first or second century AD, and it reached Japan in the sixth century. Over the next few hundred years, origami became familiar in many aspects of Japanese culture. By the Heian period of Japanese history, origami was a significant aspect of Japanese ceremony. Samurai warriors would exchange gifts adorned with noshi, a sort of good luck token made of folded strips of paper. Origami butterflies were used during the celebration of Shinto weddings to represent the bride and groom.

In the 1960's the art of origami began to spread out, first with modular origami and then with various movements developing, including the kirikomi.

French actor GERARD DEPARDIEU ensures his holiday turkey is delicious by caressing and talking to the bird before cooking it.

key to preparing the perfect fowl is to relax the turkey.

Before killing something, I always talk to it. An animal that's been caressed before it's killed dies peacefully, and its muscles don't contract with adrenalin.

Permafrost meltdown lifting the lid on Methane

The East Siberian Sea is bubbling with methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, being released from underwater reserves, according to a recent expedition.

This could be a sign that global warming is thawing underwater permafrost, which is releasing methane that has been locked away for many thousands of years.

could cause "really serious climate consequences
Underneath the permafrost are stores of methane
not been leaking, because the sub-sea permafrost served as a lid

But now global warming may be starting to release these stores of methane into the atmosphere.

"Springtime air temperatures on the East Siberian Arctic shelf [have] increased up to 5 degrees Celsius [9 degrees Fahrenheit]," Semiletov said. "It's a hot spot."

In comparison, the world as a whole has warmed about 1.25 degrees Fahrenheit (0.7 degrees Celsius) since pre-industrial times.

If abrupt methane release became widespread, it could create a feedback loop that would lead to even more drastic global warming.

Iran: such barbarians?

...Bush and his paranoid buddies wants this country gone! for their....attempt at being like humans??

LET'S TAKE A WALK THROUGH IRAN.

Here are images, I wanted to lay them out. As glimpses. Isolated glimpses into another country, one that mostly exists for us in scary soundbytes and media-approved shots of hangings and flame and the dark dark chador and the obscuring burqa. We pump the hot gas of our fear and media worship into those shadowy shapes, because after all, all of us here in the USA are experts at marketing and advertising and image. We take joy in our trade. This is our most intensive area of training.

This shot is of a woman looking into Khomeini's tomb.

This green, green foto was titled Naqsh-e-Jahaan Square.

A wondrous work of art, this rivals the most beautiful churches I've seen in the USA. I don't go in too much for religion. But I do appreciate the art that moves the hands of humans when they feel inspired. I feel much the same way as I have standing in some vast, ornate churches in New York. There are a few beauties.

Environmental Spill Disaster Devastates Tennessee; 48 Times the Size of Exxon Valdez

Approximately 500 million gallons of coal ash sludge has broken through a holding pond at a coal-fired plant.

An environmental disaster of epic proportions has occurred in Tennessee. Monday night, 2.6 million cubic yards (the equivalent of 525.2 million gallons, 48 times more than the Exxon Valdez spill by volume) of coal ash sludge broke through a dike of a 40-acre holding pond at TVA's Kingston coal-fired power plant covering 400 acres up to six feet deep, damaging 12 homes and wrecking a train.

Officials also said that the magnitude of this spill is such that the entire area could be declared a federal superfund site.
toxic substances are in that sludge: Mercury, arsenic, lead, beryllium, cadmium.
they could (at the mild end) irritate skin or trigger allergies or (longer term) cause cancer or neurological problems.

3 Smart Things About Sleeping Late

3 Smart Things About Sleeping Late
1 // You may need more sleep than you think.
Research by Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders Center found that people who slept eight hours and then claimed they were "well rested" actually performed better and were more alert if they slept another two hours. That figures. Until the invention of the lightbulb (damn you, Edison!), the average person slumbered 10 hours a night.

2 // Night owls are more creative.
Artists, writers, and coders typically fire on all cylinders by crashing near dawn and awakening at the crack of noon. In one study, "evening people" almost universally slam-dunked a standardized creativity test. Their early-bird brethren struggled for passing scores.

3 // Rising early is stressful.
The stress hormone cortisol peaks in your blood around 7 am. So if you get up then, you may experience tension. Grab some extra Zs! You'll wake up feeling less like Bert, more like Ernie.

Self-publishing a book: 25 things you need to know

Self-publishing a book: 25 things you need to know | Fully Equipped - CNET Reviews
Self-publishing is easy.

Here's how it works. You choose a size for your book, format your Word manuscript to fit that size, turn your Word doc into a PDF, create some cover art in Photoshop, turn that into a PDF, and upload it all to the self-publisher of your choice and get a book proof back within a couple of weeks (or sooner) if you succeeded in formatting everything correctly. You can then make changes and swap in new PDFs.

After you officially publish your book, you can make changes to your cover and interior text by submitting new PDFs, though your book will go offline ("out of stock") for a week or two. BookSurge charges $50 for uploading a new cover and $50 for a new interior.

Lulu offers very good, detailed instructions for the DIY crowd, doesn't require any upfront fees, and is very popular as a result. Ironically, I used Lulu's how-to content to put my book together for BookSurge, which has very poor instructions for DIYers. Interesting stat: Lulu claims to publish an average of 4,000 books a week. Oddly, the company didn't offer the size of the book I wanted to create (8 x 5.25 inches--the standard size for trade paperback novels; Lulu only offers 6 x 9, which is too big).

The 1,142-kilometer railway, which took four years to complete, is the last section of the 1,956-km Qingzang (Qinghai-Tibet) Railway from Xining to Lhasa, respectively the capital of Qinghai and Tibet. The first section, from Xining to Golmud, has been in operation since 1984.

It is the world's highest railway. Most parts of the new track from Golmud to Lhasa are located more than 4,000 meters above sea level, with the highest points at 5,072 meters. Construction of the US$5.5 billion railway was difficult because of the formidable challenge of frozen tundra, thin air and environmental protection.

It's nothing short of a miracle that these problems were overcome. Now, Tibet, which sits on the roof of the world, is no longer an isolated Shangri-la. It is estimated that nearly 3,000 passengers will arrive in Lhasa each day by train equipped with sealed, oxygenated cars

useful Oneliners and proverbs

He who blames others has a long way to go on his journey.
He who blames himself is halfway there. He who blames no one has arrived.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
He who angers you controls you!
He who fails to prepare, prepares to fail.
He who has a thing to sell
and goes and whispers in a well
is not as apt to get the dollars
as he who climbs a tree and hollers.
He who kneels before God can stand before anyone!
He who laughs last thinks slowest!
He who slings mud looses ground.
He who stands for nothing, falls for anything.
Holding on to a hurt creates more hurt.
Hope is the ability to hear the music of the future.
Faith is having the courage to dance to it today.
How do you start your days?
Good morning Lord or Good Lord, morning.
Housework is something you do that nobody notices until you don't do it.
Hugs are not measured by quantity; they are measured by quality.
Hot heads and cold hearts never solved anything.

Take wider-angle shots by creating mini-panoramas

clipped from lifehacker.com
Panoramas aren't just for gigantic, wall-sized Grand Canyon shots or cheesy "virtual" apartment tours. For those sporting a standard digital camera that doesn't have much scope to its shots, free software panorama tools can help you capture great vistas
the scenic kind
and improve shots that might have some unfortunate objects or lighting problems. We previously detailed how to stitch photos into panormas with the free, open-source tool Hugin, which I prefer for its fine-grain controls. Windows users can also check out the much simpler AutoStitch.

How the Kennedy Empire was Built

I think there may be some interesting parallels and happenings that took place in 1912 and todays problems with greed and inside information that certain people are privy to.

How the Kennedy Empire was
Built
Ted's Father Joe

The following are excerpts from :
The Sins of the Father - by
Ronald Kessler
The Kennedy Men: Three Generations of Sex,
Scandal, and Secrets
- by Nellie
Bly

- Joe's father, PJ Kennedy, was a saloon owner who used
his bar as a launching pad for his political career.
- In 1885, PJ was elected to the Massachusetts House of
Representatives, due in large part to the strong backing he
received from the liquor lobby which was worried about the
temperance movement.
- PJ would serve five terms as a state representative before
being elected to the Massachusetts Senate. PJ skillfully
used his political power to enrich himself and advance the
career of his son Joseph P Kennedy.

"That bank
examiner's job took him all over the state and laid bare the
condition of every bank he visited. He acquired information
of value to himself and others."
While still on the state
payroll as a bank examiner, Joe made an acquisition that was
aided by inside information.

Copper Fixtures Kill 95% of Superbugs

clipped from www.drweil.com

So I was pleased to learn of atrial that indicates that making door handles, sink fixtures and light switches from copper could help to keep hospitals sterile.

A study found that copper fittings rapidly killed microbeson hospital wards, succeeding where other infection control measures failed. In the trial at Selly Oak hospital, in Birmingham, England, copper sink fixtures, toilet seats and push plates on doors all but eliminated common bacteria. Lab tests show that the metal kills off the deadly MRSA and C difficile superbugs.

During the ten-week trial on a medical ward, a set of sink fixtures, a lavatory seat and a push plate on an entrance door were replaced with copper versions. They were swabbed twice a day for infectious agents and the results compared with a traditional sink fixture, lavatory seat and pushplate elsewhere in the ward.

The copper items had up to 95 per cent fewer germs on their surfaces whenever they were tested.

Why do humans kiss?

"Still, most people are satisfied with the explanation that humans kiss because it feels good. Our lips and tongues are packed with nerve endings, which help intensify all those dizzying sensations of being in love when we press our mouths to someone else’s. Experiencing such feelings doesn’t usually make us think too hard about why we kiss – instead, it drives us to find ways to do it more often".

Why do humans kiss?

Scientists currently have no explanation for this particular KISS. (CREDIT: Wok)
A big question is whether kissing is learned or instinctual. Some say it is a learned behavior
Others believe kissing is indeed an instinctive behavior
Today, the most widely accepted theory of kissing is that humans do it because it helps us sniff out a quality mate. When our faces are close together, our pheromones “talk” – exchanging biological information about whether or not two people will make strong offspring. Women, for example, subconsciously prefer the scent of men whose genes for certain immune system proteins are different from their own. This kind of match could yield offspring with stronger immune systems, and better chances for survival
