why the aussie dollar dive

Australian dollar has collapsed from nearly matching the US dollar in July.
key reasons for the historic slide

Australia's relatively high interest rates drew investors, especially from Japan, to sink their hard-earned into Aussie dollars. When the dollar dropped, however, those gains were wiped out, scorching investors who won't be back soon.

Commodities account for about half the country's exports. All good when their prices are rising, but a drag when they aren't. Iron-ore and coal are the two biggies in value terms, and prices for both are set to be slashed at coming meetings with Chinese and other Asian buyers.
Yawning deficit.

Australians have been buying more from overseas than we export for years. When dividends and debt repayments are taken into account, the gap is among the largest

The RBA has 'intervened' twice
slow the dollar's slide. That means it's been buying Australian dollars
signalling to traders that dumping the dollar is not a one-way bet.

10 Fun Facts About Pablo Picasso

the blue Rose - finally!

clipped from www.telegraph.co.uk
The world?s first blue roses have been unveiled following nearly two decades of scientific research.
The creation of blue roses – long thought to be impossible – was masterminded by an Australian-based subsidiary of Suntory, a Japanese company.

The firm has invested three billion yen in the creation of blue roses, blue carnations and other blue flowers since 1990.

Its scientists successfully pioneered implanting the gene that produces Delphinidin, the primary plant pigment that produces a blue hue but is not found naturally in roses.

A blue rose has long been synonymous with the unattainable, from signifying unrequited love in Chinese folklore to its Victorian era connotations of symbolising a quest for the impossible.

Those inspired by the image of a blue rose range from Rudyard Kipling who penned poems about the unnaturally-hued blooms to a string of characters featuring in modern day Japanese "anime" animation.

memory for pc

Computer Power User Article - DDR Deathmatch
DDR Deathmatch
A Collection Of Kits Duke It Out For Memory Supremacy
There's no doubt about it—DDR2 is the most prolific system memory technology currently in use. All of AMD’s platforms rely on it, because the Phenom and Athlon processors all have integrated memory controllers able to recognize DDR2 modules exclusively. And although Intel is pushing the advantages of DDR3 memory, most third-party motherboard vendors are still arming Core 2-based platforms with DDR2 slots. After all, DDR2 is the incumbent. It’s significantly less expensive and, thus far, almost every bit as fast as DDR3.

But the undisputed reign of DDR2 is coming to an end, just like DDR before it. The imminent launch of Intel’s Nehalem architecture will not only see the X58 chipset embrace three channels of memory in lieu of two, adding extra throughput, but it will also support DDR3 alone. Officially, you should only expect Intel to advocate DDR3-1066. Behind closed doors, however, it’s clear that a number of motherboard vendors will adopt speeds as high as 2,000MHz to push performance even further.

AMD is also expected to hop onboard with DDR3, though it won’t be cutting ties with DDR2 entirely. According to the company’s internal roadmaps, AMD plans to launch its Socket AM3 interface at the end of 2008, simultaneously introducing DDR3 and its 45nm Deneb quad-core Phenom. Those AM3-based chips should drop into AM2+ motherboards, extending the life of systems using DDR2. However, you won’t be able to drop an AM2+ processor into one of the newer boards because the older Phenoms and Athlons don’t have DDR3 memory controllers built in.

And so, DDR2 and DDR3 will be your memory options through 2009, the former fading as the latter receives intensified backing from Intel, followed by AMD’s joining the party. By rounding up a handful of memory kits centering on both technologies, we seek to find the best options for overclocking, value, and overall performance.

Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5D

TWIN2X4096-8500C5D
$135
Corsair
www.corsair.com
CPU Rating: 4

The first kit to hit our lab is Corsair’s verbosely named TWIN2X4096-8500C5D, a 4GB package consisting of two 2GB memory modules. Rated for DDR2-1066 frequencies, an enthusiast kit like this is ideal if you’re building a new system using an AMD Phenom X3 or X4 processor, which officially caps out at 1,066MHz.

Of course, raw frequency is just one variable in the performance picture. Corsair also emphasizes the low latencies of its Dominator family, to which the TWIN2X4096 belongs. At 2.1V, Corsair says that the 1,066MHz modules can achieve timings of 5-5-5-15-2T. Bear in mind that JEDEC, the semiconductor engineering standardization body responsible for defining DDR2, originally only went up to DDR2-800 in its list of DDR2 speeds. DDR2-1066 was added after the fact as a specialty spec late in 2007. Nevertheless, it bears the same 1.8V recommendation, so these Corsair modules are running a little “hot” vs. the official sanction.

Corsair deals with the higher voltage (and the increased heat generated as a result) by sandwiching the ICs on both sides of its PCB with thin extruded aluminum heatsinks. If you take a top-down look at the modules, you’ll actually see four rows of fins. The outer pair draws heat from the memory chips themselves, while the inner two pull heat from the circuit board.

If you’re building a Phenom-based enthusiast-class machine, modules like Corsair’s TWIN2X4096-8500C5D are ideal for several reasons. First, they take advantage of the fastest speed grade recognized by AMD’s built-in controller. Second, they sport ultra-low timings—a one-two punch for realizing great performance. An unlocked Phenom Black Edition CPU on a 790FX/SB750-based motherboard is going to yield the best overclocking results without ever needing to get involved with extreme memory tweaking.

But ironically, in order to get the most comparable benchmark scores, we shied away from the Phenom/790FX combo and tested using Asus’ 780i-based Striker II Formula motherboard armed with the same Core 2 Duo E8500 used to evaluate the other five kits. Corsair’s Dominator kit had little trouble keeping up with and, in the case of our Photoshop test, beating the DDR3 contenders. Of course, the extra burst of speed comes from running 4GB of capacity. We’re at an inflection point now where the move to 4GB does outweigh an extra bit of frequency.

Crucial 2GB Ballistix DDR2-800 (BL2KIT12864AA80A)

2GB (1GBx2)
Ballistix DDR2-800
$54.99
Crucial
www.crucial.com
CPU
Rating: 3.5

You don’t always need to spend big money to garner great performance. Priced under $60, this 2GB Crucial Ballistix memory kit centers on DDR2 technology rated for 800MHz. We heard great things about its overclocking headroom, though, and wanted to see how far these modules would go. But before we tune the 1GB sticks, it’s worth noting that even at stock settings, Crucial’s kit puts up a respectable fight. It is officially rated at 800MHz, running aggressive 4-4-4-12 latencies. Matched to an older, pre-Phenom AMD processor with a memory controller limited to 800MHz, these modules make for a perfect drop-in.

The Ballistix modules use nearly as much voltage as Corsair’s Dominator family—a whopping 2.0V. Like Corsair, Crucial employs heat spreaders to help combat the effects of pumping more juice through the modules. The orange aluminum plates don’t quite cover all of the memory ICs, but that doesn’t seem to hurt their performance at all. And despite overshooting JEDEC’s 1.8V standard by 0.2V, Crucial’s offering handles heat without an issue. But just in case these modules succumb to electromigration due to the elevated voltage, Crucial also protects the 2GB kit with a lifetime warranty; you’re covered.

Crucial’s kit steps into this technological cage match at a disadvantage. It not only centers on aging DDR2 but also runs at just 800MHz and offers 2GB of capacity as a kit. Although memory bandwidth at default settings clearly lags, overall performance remains competitive—even beating the 2GHz DDR3 kit from OCZ priced nearly $200 higher. Best of all, we saw great overclocking performance from the Ballistix modules. Hitting 1,066MHz at CAS 4 was stable; bandwidth started to drop off at 1,083MHz at CAS 5.

How to connect your Laptop/PC/Computer to your TV

How to connect your Laptop/PC/Computer to your TV

How to connect your Laptop/PC/Computer to your TV
wanted to show all of my pictures and videos to my family from my laptop onto our HDTV, but unfortunately I did not have the correct cords and so after fumbling around for 30 minutes trying to connect my computer to the TV, I had to tell everyone that they would have to wait till the next weekend! Pretty annoying considering the times we live in, it should be quite easy to connect the two together!

So here’s a quick walk-through of all the methods that I know (if you know any more, please comment) to connect a laptop or PC to your TV:

1. S-Video - This is probably the most common method out there currently because an S-Video cable is cheap as heck and just about every TV under the sun has a S-Video port. You’ll have to make sure you laptop is equipped with this port. Remember, there are two types of S-Video cables: 4-pin and 7-pin. Most laptops and PC’s are equipped with a 7-pin port, so if your TV only has a 4-pin S-Video port, then this method will not work.

2. VGA - If you have a HDTV, then you will be better off connecting using a VGA cable. It gives much better quality than S-Video and as with S-Video, the cable is very cheap. You usually won’t find a VGA port on regular TV’s though, so this option is if you have an HDTV.

3. DVI - DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface with “digital” being the key word there. The digital signal will give a higher quality picture than either S-Video or VGA. Of course, your computer will need to have a DVI connection and your TV will need to be an HDTV. This cord is definitely not cheap, it ranges anywhere from $40 to $80.

4. HDMI - Using HDMI will give you the best quality by far. No computers that I know of yet have HDMI ports, but you can get a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to your HDTV. HDMI is compatible with DVI.

5. Scan Converter Box - This is the last method that I could think of and it involves using a scan converter box, which takes a VGA signal and converts it into S-Video or component video.

Here’s a graphic I created with some pictures of the various cables:

Hope this helps someone!

The church traces its roots in 1218 when Abbot Henry spread a jar of cemetery soil from the Holy Land over the Chapel.

Tens of thousands of bodies have been buried in the Sedlec Ossuary by 1318 amid the plagues and the wars. Two centuries later, the bones were exhumed to give way for more interments. The Duke of Schwartzenberg ordered the use of the human remains as the ghastly adornment for the church.

Human bones turns the sacred burial and praying ground into a wonderful, bizarre, bone tingling work of art.

$21,000 'no use' for first homebuyers

$21,000 &squo;no use&squo; argues Symond | The Daily Telegraph
AUSSIE Home Loans boss John Symond claims $21,000 grants will be of little use to Sydney homebuyers unless more affordable land with services is freed up.

Mr Symond yesterday accused governments of failing to provide a solution to the housing crisis, which is more acute in Sydney than anywhere else in Australia.
$21,000 &squo;no use&squo; argues Symond | The Daily Telegraph
"Governments have to move ... because you have to get the land released, then get the cost of services right and get them connected and delivered to purchasers in an affordable environment,'' Mr Symond said.
$21,000 &squo;no use&squo; argues Symond | The Daily Telegraph
"The land is too expensive anyway,'' he said.

Mr Symond said yesterday that successive governments had negligently allowed the housing problem to get out of hand.

"To get new land release in Sydney you have to drive a couple of hours out of town and pay $300,000 or $400,000,'' he said.

"Then on each block of land on average there's $150,000 worth of costs for services which has been totally passed on to the developer and which they then totally pass on to the poor old first homebuyer.''

But some relief could be on the way over the next few weeks as Premier Nathan Rees is expected to remove controversial developer levies, which add up to $50,000 to the cost of new homes.

Guitar Zeros show gamers how to hack toy axes

globeandmail.com: Controller Freak
Guitar Zeros show gamers how to hack toy axes

Chad Sapieha, today at 11:33 AM EDT

The cover story of the latest issue of popular do-it-yourself magazine Make features the Guitar Zeros, a California-based band the bassist and lead guitarist of which use hacked Guitar Hero axes rather than traditional guitars to make music.

Owen Grace, who plays “lead controller,” was so obsessed with Activision's music game that he decided to plug his plastic instrument into his laptop and start writing software that would allow him to use the controller's five fret buttons, strummer, whammy bar, and motion sensitivity to play and dynamically modify the sound of 32 distinct notes.

He set his friend up with a hacked bass controller, recruited a drummer and a vocalist, and suddenly the Guitar Zeros had been formed. They've played dozens of gigs across the U.S., as well as a few in Canada, the U.K., and Australia.

The video below, produced by online magazine Current, includes interviews with several band members and shows a few snippets of a Guitar Zeros performance. (The atonal melodies and abrasive vocals aren't really my bag, but different strokes...)

These guys have been doing this for a couple of years now, so they've got the toy-to-instrument transformation process down to an art. The Make magazine article provides detailed information on just how they do it.

But it's not the only way to learn the band's secrets.

Fans can also check out the Guitar Zeros' online Zero Guide, which provides step-by-step instructions on how to hack a Guitar Hero axe, as well as a link to a free download of Grace's open source software.

It might also be worth keeping an eye on the band's website over the coming months. With Guitar Hero: World Tour set to release on Sunday, Grace will finally have a new instrument into which to sink his nerdy teeth—the game comes with a toy drum kit. Xtian, Guitar Zeros' percussionist, may soon find himself trading in his authentic skins for a trio of plastic pads.

Blacktown independent petrol business fights Shell

Big business have docket discounts, giveaways, all sorts of gimmicks and marketing. They can undercut us until they drive us out of business and then they'll jack prices up when we're gone.

People are fed up with paying high prices dictated to them by the majors.

This is not the end. We will continue to fight this in the hope people support us.

The Atlantis hotel = already problems

clipped from news.bbc.co.uk
Pressure is growing on Dubai's newest and largest hotel resort to free a whale shark from its aquarium.
originally said it had "rescued" the animal,

The hotel is now refusing to say if or when the whale shark will be released.

The Atlantis hotel, which opened last month, was billed as the biggest and one of the best resorts in Dubai.

But it has already witnessed some major setbacks. A fire billowed smoke through the lobby three weeks before the opening.

Then, a week after opening, one of its main water valves ruptured, resulting in no water in much of the hotel.

Now the focus is on the 4m (13ft) whale shark

CBA’s move on BankWest = Customers could face higher prices

clipped from www.choice.com.au
opposed the Commonwealth Bank’s intention to acquire BankWest, saying the merger would seriously erode competition in the banking sector.
the loss of mid-tier and regional banks through acquisition will mean consumers could face higher prices for bank products
current global financial turmoil has already taken its toll on the non-bank sector
further concentrated market power in the hands of the big four banks
follows the proposed merger between Westpac and St George bank, which is currently been assessed by Treasurer
If the Westpac-St George merger goes ahead then we see a far more concentrated market in the banking sector and consumers will be the ones who suffer

world's best restaurant

His restaurant, elBulli, has wiped the floor with all comers by being named world's best restaurant for the fourth year in succession.

The 50-seat establishment, which opens only about five months each year, receives two million applications for reservations annually, of which it fills only 8000.

Successful applicants pay a comparatively modest €200 ($335 plus wine) to be mesmerised by a 30-course meal of extraordinary complexity.

Rudd splashes on a $10.4billion economic package

Griffith University economist professor Tony Makin said yesterday the Government had acted too hastily.

"It does ring of panic to blow half the surplus in one weekend," he said. "It seems they are meeting other goals rather than simply macro-economic ones, with the issue of giving relief to pensioners around for a while.

"It would be most unusual to see a welfare-led recovery. That would be a world first."

economy was already being stimulated by last week's 1per cent interest rate cut and the sharp fall in the value of the dollar.

"If further stimulation was warranted, it would have been better coming from tax cuts and interest rate cuts, in my view," he said. "We need more public investment which is productive, unlike the consumption spending supported in this package."

the Government should have waited longer for evidence the spending package was needed.

"There's a danger they fired off half their ammunition before they've seen the enemy."

To enable Driver Verifier, click Start, Run. In the Open box, type verifier and press Enter. In the Driver Verifier Manager dialog box (shown here), select Create Standard Settings.

Verifier_1

Click Next and select the type of drivers you want to verify. Because unsigned drivers are the most likely cause of problems, I recommend that you choose the default option: Automatically select unsigned drivers.

Verifier_2

When you click Next, you get a list of all unsigned drivers on your system. Note that the list will contain some hardware drivers and some file-system filter drivers, such as those used by antivirus programs, CD burning software, and other low-level system utilities.

At this point you have two choices:

WindowsXP Tips = Identify Faulty Device Drivers

WindowsXP Tips

If you are having problems with lockups, blue screens, or can only get to safe mode,
often the problem is due to a faulty device driver.

One way to help identify them is through the use of the Verfier program

1. Start / Run / Verifier
2. Keep the default of Create Standard Settings
3. Select the type of drivers you want to confirm
4. A list of drivers to be verified on the next boot will be shown.
5. Reboot
6. If your computer stops with a blue screen, you should get an error message with the problem driver
7. To turn off the Verifier, run verifier /reset

Before using it you must ensure that you can start in Safe Mode and return from it. If verifier issues a STOP screen, rebooting in Safe Mode is the only way to reset it.

It its default configuration verifier tests "unsigned" drivers; I'd try that first. But you can take the more advanced "developer" options and have it test all drivers under maximum conditions.

If it finds something you will get a Blue Screen STOP message. Ignore the STOP parameters -- they are specific to verifier. The only thing important is the driver file name if it finds one.

If you get a STOP screen you will have to reboot to Safe Mode and run verifier again and have it "delete existing settings"

If you do not get a STOP message you can run it again checking all drivers; driver verifier will continue to run on every boot up until you run:

verifier /reset

Australian girls paint phone numbers on skin while sunbathing

Groups of young girls have been photographed in bikinis with their mobile
numbers written on their backs using blue-coloured zinc sunblock.

The 14 and 15-year-olds said they had travelled from Sydney’s inner suburbs to
Cronulla Beach in the city’s south and Manly Beach in the north to “meet
boys” and hoped the unusual tactic would encourage a few phone calls.

However, child protection agencies said the stunt was likely to attract the
wrong type of attention.

One 15-year-old, identified only as Lizzy, admitted older men had been
quickest to respond: "An old guy tried to talk to me. He was trying to take
pictures of us," she told local newspaper The Manly Daily.

what to do after upgrade/replace motherboard - Repair install

Beginners Guides: Upgrading A Motherboard Without Reinstalling - PCSTATS.com
Making windows XP work with new hardware

Unfortunately, swapping out the motherboard is not the end of your toils. Windows really doesn't like having the motherboard changed underneath it, and will generally refuse to boot at all, unless the new motherboard uses the same chipset. No problem. Read on.

Doing a Windows Repair install

To accustom Windows XP to your new hardware, you now need to perform a Windows XP repair install, which redetects all hardware and reinstalls system files without touching the registry or user data present on the system. This process adapts your Windows XP install to the new motherboard it is running on.

To do this insert the Windows CD and restart the PC.
Choose the 'press enter to set up Windows XP now' option.
Press F8 to skip through the EULA.
Now press R to begin a repair installation.

Your system will go through the entire XP install process, but will not attempt to replace any of your existing data. It will simply reinstall the system files and redetect all hardware. Once the process has completed, your computer will reboot and we can move on to the next step.

(re)Activating Windows

As you may know, Windows XP requires an activation code in order to function. This code is obtained from Microsoft in exchange for a numerical hash based on the hardware in your computer when you first activate the operating system. When you make major changes to your computer's hardware, this number will change and your XP installation
